State officials are warning about a new mail scam targeting seniors. The Minnesota Department of Commerce says Minnesotans are receiving letters that look like they’re from Publishers Clearing House instructing the recipient to wire money to receive their winnings. Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Steve Kelley cautions “if a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is.” And Kelley adds that you should never wire money or send a money order, gift card or cashier’s check to unreliable source because “once somebody does that, it’s almost impossible to recover.” Kelley says his office has heard from Minnesotans who have received the scam letters, which look authentic, but so far, there have been no reports of any Minnesotan sending money. Anyone who has received such a letter should contact the Commerce Department’s Consumer Services Center by email at consumer.protection@state.mn.us or by phone at 651-539-1600 or 800-657-3602 (Greater Minnesota).
