MN-DOT has already increased or will soon increase speed limits from 55 to 60 miles an hour on 77 percent of rural, two-lane state highways in Minnesota, the result of a five-year study. Engineering specialist Nathan Drews says they don’t expect any increase in fatal or serious crash rates. He says when the agency previously raised speed limits on other roads from 55 to 60, crash statistics didn’t increased because drivers were “still going the same speed they always were.” But Drews adds the higher limit appears to lessen differences in speed between vehicles, which might reduce frequency or severity of crashes.
