Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is being sued by 18 state attorneys general–including Minnesota A-G Lori Swanson. The lawsuit claims DeVos is delaying a rule meant to protect federal student loan borrowers defrauded by colleges. Swanson says “the rule that was put in place would have been protective of taxpayers, protective of students, good for the public and if it’s going to be abandoned, then it’s got to go through proper rule making and proper due process.” Elaborating on following proper procedure, Swanson says “just like they have to go through a rule making and public notice and comment period before they can promulgate a rule, they have to go through a similar process before they can get rid of a rule, they can’t just say ‘we don’t like it anymore, we’re going to do away with it’ they have to hear from the public and have that type of comment period and they didn’t do that here.” The Education Department says it’s reviewing the lawsuit.
