Republicans in a Minnesota House committee this afternoon will likely put Dayton administration officials on the grill over problems with state’s new vehicle licensing and registration system. Willmar Representative Dave Baker says deputy registrars are complaining how slow it is, people selling cars are having trouble and residents are tired of waiting for renewals. Baker says, “We’re hearing… from people that are just [saying], I’m going to Canada and I couldn’t get my updated license tabs, and if I have trouble getting over the Canadian border, I will tell you,… you’ll have hell to pay.” State Public Safety Department officials acknowledge there have been problems, but say despite that the new system is still processing more title transactions and registration renewals that the old one.
Baker says he’s not seeing the system getting a lot better. “We feel that it’s at a critical stage where we want to know, what is the next two, three months [going to] look like?” he says. Baker adds even when new system is fully rolled out, processing will still take longer than under the old system.
