Minnesota House Republicans’ state budget outline released Thursday would provide only about one-fourth of the 100-million-dollars Governor Mark Dayton wants to expand broadband Internet access in Greater Minnesota. House Speaker Kurt Daudt says state dollars paid out previously, basically supplanted federal dollars that Minnesota would have received anyway. He says besides that, “there’s a large amount of private dollars being invested by these companies to expand broadband.” House Democratic Minority Leader Paul Thissen responds there are places in Minnesota where private money won’t go for broadband expansion because population densities are not high enough for it to pay for itself. Thissen says the state should help so all areas have broadband.
