Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township)
A bill that would require the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board to get legislative approval for all expenditures cleared a committee in the Republican-controlled Minnesota House Wednesday over Democrats’ heated objections. Balsam Township Representative Tom Anzelc says “these are property taxes that belong to the people in the six counties of the Taconite Assistance Area. These are property taxes that are spent on public works and infrastructure.”
The proposed legislation is prompted by a legislative auditor’s report that found the IRRRB has not adequately overseen loans and grants it awards for economic development.
