The Minnesota House by a vote of 56-to-70 Thursday said “no” to allowing individual cities in Minnesota to decide whether their liquor stores could be open on Sunday. Rochester Democrat Tina Liebling argued for it saying, “Don’t tell me when I want to buy a bottle of wine on Sunday, don’t say to me, oh, you could’ve bought it on Friday. People shop when they need to shop.” Inver Grove Heights Democrat Joe Atkins responds he understands people want convenience, but says small liquor store owners can’t get enough extra revenue on Sunday to cover costs — meaning owners just lose their day off. Atkins says, “that to me seems like a big price for the sake of convenience.” Opponents of Sunday off-sale liquor warned D-W-I’s would also increase.
