An alarming new trend has teenagers, on a dare, swallowing parts of laundry detergent pods and posting videos of it online. Kirk Hughes with the Minnesota Poison Control System is warning the activity can be extremely dangerous. He says “it is not a benign ingestion…it is something we highly discourage. Anybody who ingests one of these highly concentrated laundry detergent packets and has any symptoms needs to go to an emergency room immediately.” Hughes says even ingesting a small amount of the concentrated detergent can cause burns in and around the mouth, nausea or breathing problems. Here’s MNN’s Scott Peterson’s conversation with Hughes about the dangers of ingesting laundry pods.
