National Intelligence officials are warning that Russia will try to undermine the upcoming midterm elections in the U-S. Secretary of State Steve Simon contends the fundamentals of Minnesota’s election system are “very sound,” but adds “that’s not a guarantee that nothing can happen, but we are still a pen and paper state for one, we don’t go in for these touch-screen ballot machines with no paper trail…to the contrary we are proudly old school with pen and paper .” Minnesota was one of 21 states targeted by Russian cyber attacks in the 2016 election, according to intelligence officials. Simons says “there were people with bad motives, affiliated with the Russian government, who intended to do us harm, so they targeted us in that way–I want to make very clear though–we were never hacked, in fact there wasn’t even an attempted hack, but there was an intention to look for a way into our system. Simon says staying one step ahead of “the bad guys” will take work, focus and resources.
