Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon today announced his “Investing in Democracy” agenda for the upcoming legislative session. Simon says “our Democracy faces threats from all over, threats both foreign and domestic, attempts to breach registration databases in multiple states, purges of people from the voting rolls, draconian rules seemingly designed to disenfranchise people, particularly indigenous people from voting.” Simon says 2019 must be about “defending our Democracy by investing in our Democracy…that means investing in our systems by enacting reforms like automatic voter registration, it means investing in our people by restoring the right to vote for those who have served time, come home and left prison behind.” Simon’s plan calls for increased security, decreased barriers to voter registration, restoration of voting rights for those who were formerly incarcerated and protecting voter privacy.
