Minnesota Senate lawmakers roll out their bonding bill for state public works projects this afternoon, less than two weeks before the end of the legislative session. Democrats have been asking for details for weeks and, given the short time line, it’s expected the Senate bill will be right around the number in the House bill — 825 million dollars — but the mix of projects will be different. One significant difference is that the Senate bonding package proposes 30-plus million dollars to build three new veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston — as opposed to taking the money from the Vikings Stadium Reserve fund as House Republicans propose. Governor Mark Dayton opposes “raiding” the stadium fund and has said bonding as the Senate suggests is a possibility — but he has also said 30 million dollars isn’t enough to build three new veterans homes.
