The Minnesota Senate is debating Republicans’ get-tough-on-crime package — and the GOP majority said “no” to bringing up Democrats’ bill that focuses on prevention. Saint Louis Park Senator Ron Latz says Democrats’ proposal “doesn’t do what the majority’s bill does. It does more and it does better, but they don’t want to hear that.” Republican Senator Warren Limmer from Maple Grove responds, “This is not the time to build huge bureaucracies. This is a time to react to the criminal threat that’s endangering our innocent citizens.”
But Democrats’ prevention-strategy bill *is* moving forward in the DFL-controlled Minnesota House and the two sides will have to try to reach a compromise.
