Democratic lawmakers at the State Capitol today are asking why Senate Republicans are focusing on local and state officials’ response to the Twin Cities riots, instead of why George Floyd died while in police custody? Maple Grove Republican Warren Limmer responds as sections of Minneapolis and Saint Paul burned, “The question kept coming up: Where is the police? Where is the fire emergency personnel? Where was the government to protect life and property?”
Minneapolis Democrat Scott Dibble says he hopes the hearings aren’t to assign blame and “create a pre-determined political narrative” for the fall election. Dibble says, “If we are gonna take this opportunity to spend many hours on end examining what happened in the aftermath of yet another killing of an unarmed black man — which was, I’ll add, a slow, agonizing and dehumanizing death — why can’t we spend that time trying to root out how to explain how that can happen?”
