(St. Paul, MN) — Senate Democrats at a meeting later today consider Governor Mark Dayton’s request for a special session to extend unemployment benefits for about 600 steelworkers on Minnesota’s Iron Range. The governor warns the workers could exhaust their benefits before the legislature can act in its regular session which begins in early March. Dayton also wanted a special session earlier this year to help businesses affected by the early close of the Lake Mille Lacs walleye season, but lawmakers would not agree to it.
