Democrats warn an election regulations bill that will likely pass the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate today, will restrict some Minnesotans’ access to vote. Minneapolis Democrat Bobby Joe Champion says, “When it says, ‘We the People,’ it means We the People — not only the people we want to vote.” One of many areas of contention is that the bill would prohibit a voter’s “agent” from putting their absentee ballot into a drop box. Big Lake Republican Mary Kiffmeyer says, “Minnesota is one of the most open states in regards to being able to cast your absentee ballot. That is current law, but it does not include putting them in a drop box.”
Kiffmeyer says Republicans’ bill will increase election transparency and security. Democrats warn it could allow intimidation of some voters.
