A Minnesota Senate committee today dodged one political roadblock by passing a REAL ID bill minus a controversial provision that would prohibit undocumented immigrants from getting drivers licenses. Bill sponsor, Prior Lake Republican Eric Pratt says, “The issue of creating a REAL ID and whether or not undocumented immigrants should have drivers licenses are two separate issues that should not be merged.” But a battle is still ahead because a companion bill in the Minnesota House *does* contain the controversial measure.
It’s not addressed in the bill, but John Keller with the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota said about President Trump’s executive orders on immigration, “We have significant concern about untrained local law enforcement exercising immigration enforcement.”
