The Minnesota Senate on a vote of 62-to-3 this afternoon (Thurs) passed a bill to extend unemployment benefits for out-of-work Iron Range miners, but the House likely won’t accept it because business tax cuts are not included. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Tom Bakk says 12-hundred people have already exhausted their jobless benefits and two-thousand more will soon. Bakk asked his colleagues to “think of it as your family”: There’s no money and people don’t know if their employer will ever call them back. Redwood Falls Republican Gary Dahms responded, “These folks do need help. But I think we also have to keep in mind that some of our businesses need some help.”
