A compromise bill for background checks on gun sales was rejected by the Minnesota Senate Thursday night when lawmakers ruled it out-of-order on a technicality. Saint Louis Park Democrat Ron Latz proposed the state’s existing permit-to-purchase law also cover private sales of pistols and assault weapons, assuring colleagues “this is not a registry”. Latz says, “If you or your constituents are law-abiding… persons who could now lawfully possess a firearm, this will have almost no impact on you.”
Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt (DOWT) indicated Wednesday there are some behind-the-scenes discussions on more background checks for gun sales, but changes would have to be made to bills which were previously rejected.
