The state Senate today votes on a controversial bill that would begin the process of changing Minnesota drivers licenses to comply with federal REAL ID requirements. Backers say all the bill does is allow state agencies to discuss the issue, which is prohibited by current state law. But Saint Paul Democratic Representative Carlos Mariani warns it puts Minnesota on a dangerous path. “We’re about to just hand it all over to the federal government,” he says. Supporters, including Governor Mark Dayton, say the state must deal with the issue or Minnesotans at some point will not be able to use their drivers license to board aircraft.
