The Minnesota Supreme Court hears arguments this morning in a case brought against Secretary of State Steve Simon by a conservative watchdog group that wants access to certain voter data. The Minnesota Voters Alliance wants information about instances when a voter’s eligibility has been challenged, arguing it will have a huge impact on the integrity of Minnesota’s elections. Secretary of State Simon responded that data is beyond what’s considered public information. But a district judge disagreed and so did the Minnesota Court of Appeals, saying voter data is public unless Minnesota law states otherwise — for example birthdate, Social Security number and driver’s license number. Simon appealed, saying he trusts law enforcement and county attorneys who investigate and prosecute “the few actual cases of ineligible voting in Minnesota.”
