The state Supreme Court this morning (10am) hears a challenge to a Minnesota law that lets political parties decide which candidates appear on the presidential primary ballots in March. The Minnesota Republican Party put only Donald Trump on their ballot — but plaintiffs’ attorney Erick Kaardal argues in a taxpayer-funded primary election, “We violate democracy by just having one candidate on the ballot, rather than all the candidates.”
But Secretary of State Steve Simon contends political parties are private entities that should be able to choose who is on their presidential primary ballots — and Simon warns, “If the folks who have sued win, it could mean a realistic delay in getting those absentee ballots out on time.”
Early voting is scheduled to begin January 17th in Minnesota.
