>>McCarthy To Work Out During Bye Week

(Eagan, MN) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback J-J McCarthy won’t have much time off during the bye week. Head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters yesterday that McCarthy will spend much this week working out at team headquarters and trying to progress back from his ankle injury. The second-year quarterback has missed Minnesota’s last three games and O’Connell was non-commital on when McCarthy might return to his starting role. Meanwhile, back-up quarterback Carson Wentz is dealing with a shoulder injury, but is expected to be fine to play in the next scheduled game against Philadelphia on October 19th, if he remains the starter. O’Connell was also complimentary of the team’s efforts on the offensive line in last week’s win over Cleveland in London. The coach was especially excited with how well Blake Brandel played at center. In other team news, the Vikes waived offensive lineman Vershon Lee and cut tight end Nick Vannett. (Green Bay, WI) — The Green Bay Packers got a playmaker back on the practice field. Green Bay opened the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Christian Watson, who has not played since tearing his A-C-L last season. Watson caught 29 passes for 620 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games before the injury. Offensive linemen Aaron Banks and Zach Tom also returned to practice. The Packers will host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

(Jacksonville, FL) — Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars scored a last-minute go-ahead touchdown to take down the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 on Monday Night Football from Jacksonville. Lawrence tripped and got up for a one-yard T-D run with 23 seconds remaining to lift the Jags to their third straight victory. On his 26th birthday, Lawrence completed 18-of-25 passes for 221 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 54 yards and two scores. Devin Lloyd led the Jacksonville defense with a 99-yard pick-six in the third quarter. The Jags are second in the A-F-C South at 4-1. Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes completed 29-of-41 passes for 318 yards, one T-D and a pick. He also rushed for 60 yards and a score. The Chiefs are third in the A-F-C West at 2-3.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The University of Minnesota football team will be back to practice today as it gets ready to host Purdue for Homecoming on Saturday night at 6:40 P-M. The 3-2 Golden Gophers are 1-1 in the Big Ten after this past Saturday’s 42-3 loss at number-one Ohio State. Minnesota head coach P-J Fleck says his team has responded well to the setback with productive meetings on Sunday. Fleck says the attention is now focused on winning the game this week. Purdue enters this weekend’s contest on a three-game losing streak, sitting at 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten. Illinois knocked off the Boilermakers last Saturday 43-27.

Carleton senior kciker Marcus Merkelbach of Seattle is the MIAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week after helping the Knights to a win over Gustavus Adolphus. Augustana senior linebacker Logan Leonard of Minnetrita is the N-S-I-C Football Defensive Player of the Week after racking up 13 tackles in a win over Sioux Falls. Wild general manager Bill Guerin added a couple of pieces in the offseason to his roster but the most important work was extending two thirds of his top line along with locking down his starting goaltender. Both Kirill Kaprizov and Marco Rossi were given contract extensions in recent weeks which included making Kaprizov the highest paid player in N-H-L history. Then over the weekend, goaltender Filip Gustavsson signed a five year, 35 million dollar deal. The Wild will spend the this week preparing for the opener against the Blues in St. Louis on Thursday night. Puck drops at 7 P-M.
