Monday afternoon news briefs

December 4, 2017 By Scott Peterson

A cybersecurity attack has hackers posting fake news stories on Explore Minnesota’s Facebook page today. A spokesperson for the state’s tourism office says they’re working with Facebook to solve the problem. In a statement, Explore Minnesota says it’s social media team is currently blocked off from access to the Facebook page. Minnesota I-T services and a cybersecurity team are investigating.

The family of a Minnesota teenager who died while having her wisdom teeth removed has reached a two-million-dollar settlement with the Edina oral surgeon who performed the procedure. The Star Tribune reports that the family of Sydney Galleger settled the suit last month. A medical malpractice suit alleged that Dr. Paul Tompach’s “negligent and dangerous” actions during the June 2015 dental procedure led to 17-year-old Galleger’s death.

A Willmar musician will serve jail time for groping a woman in the memory care unit of a local nursing home. 72-year-old Terry Shaw was caught on camera in April groping a woman suffering from dementia. Shaw had just finished a concert at the home. He claimed it was an accident. Shaw will face a fine, five years supervised probation and must register as a predatory offender.

Former Governor Jesse Ventura is holding a news conference later this afternoon (3pm) after he and the estate of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle have agreed to dismiss Ventura’s defamation case. Ventura sued Kyle after Kyle wrote that he punched a man–later identified as Ventura–in a bar. Ventura says that never happened. Ventura had been awarded nearly two-million dollars by a jury in 2014, but that was overturned on appeal.

Blizzard warnings are posted in far northwestern Minnesota this afternoon as real winter weather moves in. National Weather Service Meteorologist Eric Ahasic says it’s a “pretty potent storm system moving up through the Great Plains here, basically moving from southwest Minnesota through the Twin Cities and then up into Lake Superior throughout the day today.” Ahasic says the Twin Cities could see record high temps today–but a cold front should cause temps to drop throughout the state by tomorrow morning.
