Monday morning briefs

October 2, 2017 By Tasha Redel

Three people were killed in a two vehicle crash near Benson Saturday morning. The three who died were in a vehicle that the Swift County Sheriff’s Department says went through a yield sign at an intersection of township roads southeast of Benson and collided with another vehicle around 5 a.m. Saturday. According to social media, the victims have been identified as Austin Ardoff and Autumn McClain of Willmar, both 23, and 24-year-old Dylan Peterson of Benson. The driver of the other vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was taken to the Benson Hospital, treated and released.

Two police officers were hurt in Bemidji after an ATV crashed into their squad car. Authorities think the woman driving the vehicle who led officers on a chase had been drinking. All three are recovering in the hospital.

Despite a massive need for humanitarian aid in Puerto Rico, 15 Spanish-speaking Minnesota law enforcement officers who were set to go help out are now staying in Minnesota. The Pioneer Press reports the island government is now requesting fewer officers who can stay longer periods of time and bring their own vehicles. Police say they are still ready if needed in any way to help following the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

There is a flash flood watch over a good portion of the state later today and this evening. The National Weather Service predicts more rain, heavy at times, from Redwood Falls northeast into the Arrowhead. Cities which could see sudden jumps in water levels include Willmar, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Hinckley and Duluth.

A 29-year old Kenyan is the winner of the Twin Cities Marathon three years running. Dominic Ondoro took the 26-point-two-mile race from Minneapolis to St. Paul in two-hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds. Among the women, Jane Kibii won for the second time in a row with a time of two-hours, 30-minutes and 25 seconds.
