>>Minnesota Legislature Returns from Easter/Passover Break

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota lawmakers return to the State Capitol today (Mon12pm) following the Easter/Passover break.  Passing a two-year state budget and a bonding bill are among the top priorities for the legislature.  The House Ways and Means Committee is scheduled to take up the 172-million-dollar agriculture finance bill this afternoon.  Only a handful of bills have been passed this session, but House and Senate leaders are confident they can complete their work by the May 19th deadline.

 

>>Pope Francis Dies at Age 88

(Vatican City, IT) —  Catholics in Minnesota and around the world are mourning the loss of Pope Francis.  The 88-year-old passed away earlier today about a month after leaving a hospital in Rome where he was treated for various respiratory ailments.  Pope Francis’ birth name was Jorge Bergoglio and he was born in Argentina.  He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first pope from outside Europe since the 8th Century.  During his papacy, the Church faced several child sexual abuse cases involving about three-thousand priests, some of which dated back 50 years.  Pope Francis made sweeping changes that allow for greater transparency.

 

>>Paisley Park Admission Free on 9th Anniversary of Prince’s Death

(Chanhassen, MN) — Admission to Paisley Park in Chanhassen is free today (Mon) on the ninth anniversary of Prince’s death.  ‘A Day 2 Reflect’ is a celebration of the life of Prince Rogers Nelson.  Prince fans are invited to create an origami dove with a custom message and there will be candle lighting in the N-P-G Music Club at 4:21 pm.  Tickets are required for ‘A Night 2 Remember’ this evening which includes a walk-through tour and a screening of a 2011 live Prince concert from Greensboro, North Carolina.  Prince died on April 21st, 2016 of an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 57.

 

>>Minnesota Farm Leaders Closely Watching Tariffs, Trade War

(Waverly, MN) — Farm leaders in the state are paying close attention to the U-S tariffs and trade war with some of our partners.  Minnesota Farm Bureau President Dan Glessing says farmers want some certainty.  He says, “obviously the tariffs are a concern, but the low commodity prices the last couple of years are probably more of a concern right now, because we haven’t seen a whole lot of effect of the tariffs on our day to day lives yet.”  Glessing says the duration of the tariffs will “tell the tale.”  China is the top importer of Minnesota soybeans.

 

>>State Officials Urge Motorcycle Safety During Spring Riding Season

(St. Paul, MN) — Motorcycles are back on Minnesota roads in large numbers.  State motorcycle safety coordinator Jay Bock says motorcyclists should sharpen up their skills in the spring.  He encourages riders to take a training course, go to a parking lot and get braking down, and make sure your bike is in good shape after the winter.  Bock says drivers need to remember to share the roadway with motorcycles and double check their blind spots.  He says it’s disappointing that motorcycle fatalities in Minnesota rose from 69 in 2023 to 74 last year.

 

>>Man and Woman Found Dead in Vehicle Outside St. Paul Strip Mall

(St. Paul, MN) — Police in St. Paul are investigating the deaths of two people found dead inside a vehicle.  Officers received a report about two people in a car at Shamrock Plaza around 5 pm Sunday.  Paramedics pronounced the man and woman dead at the scene.  Investigators haven’t released any other information, but said their deaths do not appear suspicious.  The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to identify the man and woman and their cause of death.

 

>>Juvenile Female Dies in Police Pursuit in Itasca County

(Grand Rapids, MN) — A teenage girl is dead after leading Itasca County authorities on a chase early Sunday morning.  Investigators say a deputy spotted the car without its headlights on  and tried to stop the suspect vehicle, but the driver fled the scene.  The pursuit continued until the vehicle crashed near Highway 6 and County Road 11 in Cohasset Township.  The juvenile female died at the scene and was not wearing a seatbelt.

 

>>Man Killed in Rollover Crash near Otter Tail Lake in West Central Minnesota

(Ottertail, MN) — A 69-year-old Ottertail man is the victim of a deadly rollover crash Sunday afternoon near Otter Tail Lake in west central Minnesota.  The State Patrol says the vehicle left the highway, rolled and came to rest on its roof.  Troopers say the driver died at the scene.  His name is expected to be released later today.

 

>>Maple Grove Man Found Fatally Shot in Vehicle in Minneapolis Apartment Crash

(Minneapolis, MN) — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Maple Grove man outside a north Minneapolis apartment building.  Officers say they found 27-year-old Davione Collins dead inside a vehicle Saturday night that crashed into the apartment garage entrance.  Investigators discovered evidence of gunfire in the parking lot.  Police Chief Brian O’Hara says this is the first fatal shooting in Minneapolis since February 7th.  No arrests have been made in Collins’ death.

 

>>Minnesota Wild Fall to Golden Knights in NHL Playoff Opener in Vegas

(Las Vegas, NV) — The Minnesota Wild fell to the Golden Knights 4-2 in the playoff opener Sunday night in Las Vegas.  Matt Boldy scored twice for Minnesota in the loss and Kirill Kaprizov assisted on both goals.  Ben Howden had a pair of goals for Vegas including the eventual game-winner.  Filip Gustavsson took the loss on 23 saves.  Aiden Hill stopped 19 Wild shots to earn the victory.  Game 2 is late Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena.
