(St. Paul, MN) — A bill approved by the Minnesota House Ways and Means Committee would provide extended benefits to the laid off mine workers on the Iron Range. Six-hundred miners were temporarily laid off in March in Hibbing and Virginia. Representative Cheryl Youakim of Hopkins said, ” I just want to highlight the fact that I think all of us in this room want to make sure our workers are taken care of when something like a mine unexpectedly shuts down.” Under this bill, the miners would receive an additional 26 weeks of unemployment benefits that would carry until June 2026. The bill is headed to the House floor for consideration.

(St. Paul, MN) — A federal lawsuit filed by Attorney General Keith Ellison claims that President Trump’s executive orders against transgender people are unlawful and unconstitutional. Ellison says they ban trans kids from sports in schools and deny their civil rights. The A-G told reporters, “Trump’s burning desire to destroy trans kids and punish us for helping them live and thrive isn’t just a violation of the law, It’s a violation of Minnesota values.” Ellison says the Department of Justice threatened to withhold federal funds from Minnesota, and seek judicial resolution, if the state didn’t comply with those orders.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota B-C-A is naming the teenage girl killed in a high-speed police chase and crash Sunday morning in Itasca County. Agents identified the driver as 13-year-old Angelica Bryan of Cass Lake. Investigators say an Itasca County deputy attempted to stop the S-U-V for driving without its headlights, but the driver failed to stop. The suspect vehicle reached speeds over 90 miles per hour before driving off Highway 6 and crashing into a tree. Authorities say Bryan died at the scene. The van was reported stolen that night from a home in Cohasset.

(Willmar, MN) — A Willmar man is sentenced to more than six years in prison for driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in December of 2023. A Kandiyohi County judge sentenced 34-year-old Paulo Portillo Tuesday to 75 months in prison for criminal vehicular homicide-leaving the scene of an accident. Portillo was given credit for 455 days already spent behind bars. Portillo struck and killed 52-year-old Jason Jarvis of Cokato December 26th 2023 and then fled the scene. He turned himself in to police one month later. Portillo pleaded guilty last November.

(Ramsey, MN) — Anoka County authorities are still investigating the deaths of a woman and a man inside a home in Ramsey on Tuesday afternoon. Police say a man approached a neighbor while armed with a gun before returning to his house. Law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order and attempted to contact the homeowners. After gaining entry, they discovered the bodies of the woman and the man. Their identities have not yet been released.

(Biwabik, MN) — Authorities in St. Louis County say a man from Chisholm is hospitalized with injuries suffered in an A-T-V crash Tuesday night near Biwabik. Sheriff’s deputies say the 21-year-old rider was found near the four-wheeler with head and leg injuries and was not wearing a helmet. The man was conscious and talking with first responders before being airlifted to a Duluth hospital.

(Edina, MN) — A large police presence was seen at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. The incident took place Tuesday afternoon when witnesses saw someone walk into the hospital with what they believe was a firearm. Edina police say that there was some kind of domestic assault or dispute that took place inside one of the hospital rooms involving people who knew each other. The suspect was taken into custody, no injuries were reported, and a gun was recovered.

Kirill Kaprizov scored a pair of goals and Matt Boldy, Marcus Foligno, and Mats Zucarello also lit the lamp for Minnesota. Filip Gustavsson made 30 saves for the win. The Wild had a 3-0 lead in the first period. Game 3 is Thursday night at the Xcel Energy Center.

(Los Angeles, CA) — The Minnesota Timberwolves fell to the Lakers 94-85 last night and the first-round playoff series is now tied 1-1. L-A had an early 22-point lead and was able to hang on for a nine-point victory. Julius Randle led Minnesota with 27 points and Anthony Edwards had 25. Lakers star Luka Doncic finished with 31 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists on his home court. The series moves to Target Center Friday night for Game 3.
