>>Walz Panel Names 6 Finalists for 2 Minnesota Supreme Court Vacancies

(St. Paul, MN) — There are now six finalists for the two upcoming vacancies on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Governor Tim Walz’s merit selection panel recommended University of Minnesota senior associate counsel Lisa Beane; Civil Rights Appellate Clinic founder Elizabeth Bentley; Court of Appeals Judges Keala Ede and Theodora Gaïtas; Stearns County Judge Sarah Hennesy; and Solicitor General for the State of Minnesota Liz Kramer. The governor will select two finalists to replace Supreme Court Justices Barry G. Anderson and Margaret Chutich. They both came to the state’s high court from the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

 

>>Apple River Stabbing Trial Continues in St. Croix County Wisconsin

(Hudson, WI) — Testimony continues today (Tues) in the trial of a Minnesota man charged with fatally stabbing a Stillwater teen and wounding four others on the Apple River in western Wisconsin. Fifty-four-year-old Nicolae Miu (mew) of Prior Lake pleaded not guilty to the first-degree intentional homicide of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman and multiple counts of attempted homicide in the July 30th, 2022 incident. The jury saw a cellphone video of the confrontation between Miu and the tubers in court Monday. His attorneys argue that Miu stabbed Schuman and the others in self-defense after they attacked him. Prosecutors say he should have left the scene instead of escalating the fight and pulling out a knife.

 

>>OutFront MN Extends Financial Support to LGBTQ+ Crime Victims

(St. Paul, MN) — OutFront Minnesota, the state’s largest LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, says it is providing financial support to victims and survivors of violence within the queer community. Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act , the one-time award ranging from $250-$2,5000 is open to Minnesotans 18 years and older who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and have experienced violence. >>3M Reaches $10 Billion Settlement With Public Water Suppliers Over Forever Chemicals

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota-based 3M says a federal judge has approved a settlement with over 12,000 public water suppliers across the nation. The settlement resolves a class-action lawsuit over water contamination caused by “forever chemicals” linked to 3M products. Over the next 13 years, 3M will pay the water systems just over ten billion dollars for testing, remediation, and treatment. In 2018, the company reached a settlement of $850 million in contamination with the state of Minnesota.

 

>>3 Charged in Multiple Pound Meth Bust on Iron Range

(Hibbing, MN) — Three people face drug charges after an investigation netted multiple pounds of methamphetamine and some cocaine in Hibbing. St. Louis County prosecutors say Jennifer Schostag of Anoka, David Hoskins of Sandstone and Michael Peterson of Hibbing were arraigned Monday for multiple counts of first-degree sale and possession of meth and cocaine. The Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force executed several search warrants last Thursday and seized the drugs. Officers say a fourth suspect was arrested and released pending charges.

 

>>Inver Grove Heights Bank Robbery Suspect Draws 10-Year Firearm Sentence

(Minneapolis, MN) — A man from Indiana will spend ten years in federal prison for illegally possessing a gun after a December 2022 bank robbery in Inver Grove Heights. Authorities searched a home where 45-year-old Deundrick McIntosh kept his belongings and found a gun with an extended magazine – plus cash and “bait” bills from the robbery. Police said two men wearing masks zip-tied two bank employees and made off with nearly 80 thousand dollars. McIntosh pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm. He has previous felony convictions for bank robbery and domestic assault.

 

>>Teen Arrested for Making Online Threat to Elk River School District

(Elk River, MN) — A teenager has been arrested in connection with an online threat made against a central Minnesota school. The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office says they worked with the Elk River Police Department Monday to investigate a message posted to the social media app Snapchat. The post threatened acts of violence later this week at a school in the Elk River School District. Authorities arrested a 13-year-old boy they believe posted the message and say there is no ongoing threat to any schools in the district.

 

>>USDA Progress Report Shows Snow Affected Fieldwork in Minnesota

(Lincoln, NE) — Remnants of winter left much of Minnesota under several inches of snow last week. In its first weekly crop condition and progress report of 2024, the U-S-D-A says the moisture allowed little fieldwork to be done in the state. Topsoil moisture levels are rated 62 percent adequate to surplus statewide, and subsoil is rated 46 percent adequate to surplus. Oat planting is six percent complete, more than three weeks ahead of last year and two weeks ahead of the five-year average.

 

>>Minnesota DNR Taking Reservations for 3 State Park Tours

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is now taking reservations for three popular state park tours. The D-N-R’s Sara Berhow says they are the Underground Mine tours at Lake Vermillion Soudan Underground Mine State Park, the Prairie and Bison Tours at Blue Mounds State Park, and Mystery Cave State Parks tours at Forestville. She says all those tours can be paired with a camping trip. The tours will begin in May and reservations can be made at mndnr.gov.

 

>>$1 Million Powerball Ticket Sold in Minnesota for Monday’s Drawing

(Roseville, MN) — A ticket sold in Minnesota for Monday night’s Powerball drawing is a one-million-dollar winner. State Lottery officials say the ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store in Fridley. Nobody won the billion-dollar Powerball jackpot, but there were six one-million-dollar tickets in Minnesota, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and two in Maryland. Tickets purchased at Kwik Trip stores in Monticello and Burnsville won 50 thousand dollars last night. The grand prize for Wednesday’s drawing is nearly one-point-one-billion dollars – the fifth largest Powerball jackpot.
