(St. Paul, MN) – It’s Primary Day in Minnesota, and the state has already set a record for absentee and mail ballots. As of Monday morning, Secretary of State Steve Simon announced that the state has already received 206,196 early ballots, the highest total for any non-presidential election primary. Polls are open today until 8 p.m. If you have any election questions, the Secretary of State’s Office says check their website at mnvotes.gov. The general election is scheduled for November 3rd.

In races where more than one candidate is seeking a party’s nomination, the winner advances to the November election. In nonpartisan contests, the top finishers move on.

Schultz also expects relatively low turnout, which he says is typical of August primaries. One closely watched race is the Democratic U.S. Senate primary between Congresswoman Angie Craig and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. Winners advance to the November 3rd general election.

(St. Paul, MN) — The BCA is investigating after a St. Paul police officer shot and wounded an armed suspect near Regions Hospital Monday morning. Police say officers were responding to a domestic assault when the suspect fled. Authorities located him, and he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at officers. One officer fired, striking the man in the hand and back. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers or bystanders were hurt.

(Undated) – Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison says a federal court has again ruled against the Trump Administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development in a dispute over homelessness funding. Ellison and a coalition of states challenged changes to a federal housing program, arguing they would have reduced support for permanent housing projects. The attorney general says more than 2,000 Minnesotans could have been at risk of losing housing assistance. The Rhode Island court ruled HUD’s latest funding restrictions cannot be implemented.

(Washington, D.C.) – Minnesota Senator Tina Smith has introduced a bill that will expand research, testing and treatment for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Smith says according to the Minnesota Department of Health, Lyme disease remains the state’s most-commonly reported tick-borne disease. MDH says there were 3,551 probable cases in 2024. The bill is named the “Kay Hagan Tick Reauthorization Act,” named after the North Carolina Senator who passed away in 2019 from complications from a tick-borne disease.

(St. Louis County, MN) — An 18-year-old is in custody after allegedly firing a handgun during an altercation at a bonfire in North Star Township. St. Louis County deputies were called to the area of Pequaywan Lake and Fox Farm roads early Sunday morning. Investigators say the suspect and his friends had been asked to leave the gathering when he allegedly fired two rounds. No one was injured. Deputies recovered a nine-millimeter handgun and ammunition. The suspect was jailed on assault, terroristic threats, and weapons charges.

Police say officers responded to a domestic assault call Monday morning and later located the armed suspect near Regions Hospital. Authorities say the man fled and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers. One officer fired, striking the suspect in the hand and back. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No officers or bystanders were hurt. The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave.

(Undated) – Minnesota flags will fly at half-staff Tuesday in honor of former state Supreme Court Justice Esther Tomljanovich. Governor Tim Walz ordered the tribute, calling “Justice T” a trailblazer who served with kindness and dedication. Raised on the Iron Range, Tomljanovich became the state’s second woman judge and later the third woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court. She also championed women’s rights and equal pay efforts throughout her career. Businesses and residents are encouraged to lower their flags as well.

(Undated) — This summer’s wildfire smoke may be affecting more than Minnesotans’ physical health. Clinical health psychologist Dr. Kristi White says smoky conditions can contribute to stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression, while fine particulate pollution can also affect the brain. White says patients have expressed frustration about losing some of Minnesota’s best summer days for outdoor activities. She says there’s also growing anxiety about climate change and the possibility that wildfire smoke and extreme weather could become a more regular part of Minnesota summers.

Minnesota Sports and Events has launched its Golden Ticket raffle, with five winners each receiving a pair of tickets to games featuring teams including the Twins, Lynx, Timberwolves, Minnesota United, Frost, Aurora and University of Minnesota athletics. The event is scheduled for Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Rice Park. Minnesota MVL begins play in January 2027.
