Swanson, an immigration attorney and former federal immigration official, entered the race with the DFL endorsement. She will face Republican incumbent Congressman Pete Stauber in the November general election. The 8th District covers much of northeastern Minnesota, including Duluth, the Iron Range, and the Arrowhead region.

(Parkers Prairie, MN) — One person is unaccounted for following a house explosion northwest of Parkers Prairie Tuesday morning. Just before 10 a.m., Otter Tail County firefighters, EMS crews, and law enforcement responded and found the home fully engulfed in flames. The explosion is under investigation.
>> Firefighter Dies After Medical Emergency Near Ely
(Ely, MN) — A firefighter assigned to the wildfire response in northeastern Minnesota died late Tuesday morning after suffering a medical emergency near Ely. The firefighter was taken to a hospital but did not survive. The firefighter was from Alaska and had been assigned to the July Lightning Fires burning in the Superior National Forest. Officials say firefighting operations did not directly cause the medical emergency. The firefighter’s name has not been released.
>>MnDOT to Host Snowplow Operator Training in Southern Minnesota
(Mankato, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is preparing for winter with snowplow operator training in Mankato. About a dozen new operators from south-central Minnesota will take part in the two-week program beginning August 17th. Training includes snowplow operation, safety, equipment maintenance, and proper treatment of winter roads. Drivers will also practice maneuvering plow trucks through an obstacle course and on area highways. MnDOT operates 83 plow trucks that maintain more than 3,200 lane miles in south-central Minnesota.
