>>Walz to Accept Vice Presidential Nomination at Democratic National Convention

(Chicago, IL) — The 2024 Democratic National Convention kicks off today (Mon) in Chicago and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be in the spotlight as the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris.  Walz will formally accept the vice presidential nomination on Wednesday night and deliver a speech.  The Minnesota D-N-C delegates are meeting for breakfast each morning (7:30-9am) of the convention.  President Joe Biden is the keynote speaker tonight and First Lady Jill Biden is also scheduled to speak at the United Center.  Vice President Harris will give her acceptance speech as the Democrats’ official presidential nominee on Thursday evening.

 

>>Minnesotans to Protest in Support of Gaza at DNC

(Minneapolis, MN) — More than 100 Twin Cities activists and community members plan to protest the war in Gaza at the Democratic National Convention.  The group left Minnesota Sunday night for Chicago.  Organizers say they will demand protections for immigrants, interventions in the climate crisis, and an end to funding what they call Israel’s occupation of Palestine.  The Minnesota Anti-War Committee says they’ve been pressuring Governor Tim Walz to divest state public worker pensions from Israeli companies, but lack of movement has brought them to protest in Chicago.

 

>>4 Kids Ages 11 to 14 Shot in Stolen Kia in North Minneapolis

(Minneapolis, MN) — Police are investigating a shooting in north Minneapolis early Sunday that wounded four kids between the ages of 11 and 14.  Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters, ” five minors were inside of a stolen Kia driving in this area here when a dark-colored sedan began following them and firing at them in fully automatic gunfire . He says about 30 pieces of ballistic evidence, shell casings were recovered from the scene.  O’Hara says two boys and a girl suffered non-life threatening injuries and a second girl is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.  Officers are still looking for the suspected shooter.

 

>>Tribes in Minnesota Expected to Open Additional Cannabis Dispensaries

(St. Paul, MN) — The number of places to buy legal cannabis in Minnesota is expected to grow this fall.  Josh Collins of the Office of Cannabis Management says the state’s three current dispensaries are operated by Native American tribes.  He says, “it’s very possibly that between now and early 2025 that you may see additional retail outlets open up on tribal lands.”  Collins says Minnesota’s law allows the state to partner with tribal governments on the adult-use cannabis industry.  State-licensed cannabis retailers are expected to open sometime next year.

 

>>Air Quality Alert in Northern Minnesota Until Noon

(St. Paul, MN) — Air quality in northern Minnesota is expected to improve later today (Mon) as a low-pressure system moves into the state.  The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency expanded an air quality alert over the weekend as wildfire smoke stalled over the northern part of the state.  The alert for sensitive groups will expire at noon today.  The M-P-C-A’s air quality forecast for tomorrow anticipates good conditions in southern Minnesota and moderate pollution in areas north of the Twin Cities.

 

>>Duluth Man Sentenced for Fatal Drive-By Shooting in August 2023

(Duluth, MN) — A Duluth man is sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for a deadly drive-by shooting in August of 2023.  Prosecutors say 22-year-old Sanussi Bangoura and Brandon Williams-Gillard shot from a vehicle towards 19-year-old Paris Allen and another man and Allen was killed.  Bangoura was convicted in June of aiding and abetting second-degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and drive-by shooting.  He was sentenced to a total of 499 months in prison on the three counts, but the judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently.  Williams-Gillard was sentenced to 40 years.

 

>>Man Killed in Motorcycle vs. SUV Crash in East Bethel

(East Bethel, MN) — Anoka County authorities say a motorcyclist is dead after a crash in East Bethel Saturday afternoon.  Sheriff’s deputies say an S-U-V was turning left into a driveway when the motorcycle from behind hit the driver’s side.  An off-duty officer and first responders provided medical aid, but the cyclist died at the scene.  The woman driving the S-U-V had minor injuries.

 

>>Southern Minnesota Man Dies in Iowa Car Crash

(Scarville, IA) — A southern Minnesota man is the victim of a fatal car crash in northern Iowa.  The Iowa State Patrol says a driver lost control on a curve in Scarville, which is located a few miles south of the Iowa-Minnesota border.  Investigators say the pickup rolled several times, killing a man from Albert Lea.  The driver’s name will be released following notification of his family.

 

>>National Service Park Planned for Southeastern Minnesota

(Plainview, MN) — A park that honors Peace Corps volunteers is scheduled for construction in southeastern Minnesota.  Several groups associated with the Peace Corps are planning to build a National Service Park near Rochester in 2026.  The “Peace Corps Plaza” in Plainview will include bricks with the names of volunteers, the countries where they served and the dates they were there.  The groups organizing the construction hope the park will inspire more people to volunteer for national service.  They are currently raising money for the project and have yet to announce an overall timeline for construction.

 

>>Minnesota Vikings Sign Cornerback Stephon Gilmore to 1-Year Deal

(Eagan, MN) — Five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore is reportedly signing a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings.  E-S-P-N reports the contract is worth up to ten million dollars with seven million guaranteed.  Thirty-three-year-old Gilmore had two interceptions and a forced fumble for the Dallas Cowboys last season.  Gilmore played two seasons under Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores in New England.  He visited Vikings team headquarters last Monday but left town without a deal.

 

>>Minnesota Twins Lose Series Finale at Texas Rangers in Extras

(Arlington, TX) — The Minnesota Twins dropped the series finale to the Texas Rangers 6-5 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon in Arlington.  Carlos Santana hit the game-tying home run in the ninth inning, but an error on a throw to first base in the tenth allowed the winning run to score.  Pablo Lopez pitched six scoreless innings before reliever Jorge Alcala gave up five runs in the seventh.  The Twins open a three-game series tonight (Mon 8:40pm) at the San Diego Padres.
