>>10 Tornado Reports in Southern Minnesota, Power Outages and Flooding

(Chanhassen, MN) —  The National Weather Service says it received at least ten reports of tornadoes Monday night in south central Minnesota. There were reported tornado touchdowns near St. James, Winnebago, Janesville, and Wells. The twister spotted near St. James damaged buildings, crops, trees, and powerlines but no injuries were reported. Thousands of homes in southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities lost power due to severe storms.  One-a-half-inch was reported in the Madelia area.  The heavy rains also caused flash flooding in parts of southeastern Minnesota.

 

>>Walz Appears at Harris Fundraiser But Won’t Say if He’s the VP Pick

(Minneapolis, MN) — “We’ve got an incredible candidate,” Governor Tim Walz said last night (Mon) at a private fundraiser in Minneapolis, but would not say whether he is Kamala  Harris’s choice for her vice-presidential running mate.   Numerous sources are reporting it’s between Walz and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, with Harris expected to make the official announcement sometime today (Tues) before this evening’s kickoff at Temple University in Philadelphia for her battleground state tour with her chosen running mate.  Walz told the fundraiser audience that former President Donald Trump “stole our joy” and “we’ve got a chance to put an end to the division in this country.”  Although Walz labels Trump and running mate J-D Vance as “weird,” he said he doesn’t intend to call all Republicans that, because “They re my neighbors. These are people that I love.”

 

>>2024 Farmfest Begins Tuesday in Redwood County

(Morgan, MN) —  Thousands of Minnesotans are heading to Redwood County today (Tues) for the opening of Farmfest near Morgan.  The three-day event on 50 acres features agricultural products, services, and technologies from more than 500 exhibitors and vendors.  Farmfest is hosting political candidate forums today and tomorrow.  Candidates for Minnesota’s 1st and 2nd congressional district will face off this morning starting at 10:30 and the 6th, 7th and 8th district forums begin this afternoon (Tues 1:15pm).  The U-S Senate candidates forum featuring incumbent Senator Amy Klobuchar is Wednesday morning.

 

>>FEMA Inspectors on the Ground in St. Louis County

(Duluth, MN) —  FEMA inspectors are on the ground in northeastern Minnesota assessing damage to homes and businesses from the June floods.  St. Louis County Emergency Manager Josh Brinkman says flood victims can apply for individual disaster assistance and get the inspection done in one visit.  Brinkman says affected homeowners and renters are eligible for grants and low-interest loans.  He says flood victims in southern Minnesota are getting FEMA dollars in their bank accounts in about a week.  There’s more information about FEMA inspections and applications at disasterassistance.gov.

 

>>70-Year-Old Man Injured in Fall at Tettegouche State Park on North Shore

(Silver Bay, MN) — Authorities on the North Shore say a 70-year-old man is hospitalized after falling at Tettegouche State Park near Silver Bay.  The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says the man was walking down the steps to the High Falls Sunday afternoon when he fell and suffered a head injury.  Deputies say a nurse at the scene reported the victim was in stable condition with a head wound and multiple cuts.  The man was later taken by helicopter to the hospital.

 

>>Iron Range Man Sentenced to 46 Years in Prison for Killing Babbitt Couple

(Duluth, MN) —  The sentence is more than 46 years in prison for an Iron Range man who pleaded guilty to killing a couple he was living with in Babbitt.  Fifty-four-year-old Roger Beldo was sentenced Monday for the second-degree murders of 78-year-old Clifford and 79-year-old Christine Johnson.  The criminal complaint says Beldo beat the Johnsons to death with a tire iron and hammer last October.  Beldo told the court at sentencing, “I did not kill them.”  He pleaded guilty to their murders in May.

 

>>Moorhead Man Faces Rape, Assault, Drug Charges in Fargo

(Fargo, ND) — A Moorhead man faces rape, assault, and drug possession charges after allegedly breaking into a woman’s Fargo apartment and sexually assaulting her.  Police say the victim reported that 36-year-old Alonzo William Jr. broke into her apartment July 29th, chased her into her room, and raped her.  The victim went to the hospital later in the morning.  Apartment residents say the man known as ‘Lil Bill’ matched the suspect’s description.  William was in a garage less than 100 yards from the victim’s apartment.  Officers say they found fentanyl pills, a glass pipe, and marijuana in William’s backpack.

 

>>DNR and MPCA Investigate 1,400 Dead Fish in Duluth

(Duluth, MN) — The D-N-R and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) are investigating after hundreds of dead fish washed up along Tischer Creek in Duluth.  Officials say the types of fish affected include Brook trout and minnows, and they counted more 1,400 dead fish.  All aquatic life in the creek was also affected.  Researchers say evidence suggests the fish kill was not due to natural causes.
