(St. Paul, MN) — The next budget outlook for the state of Minnesota will be announced on Friday. It should give us an updated idea of the financial strain caused by federal cuts. The last budget forecast in November showed a $2.5 billion surplus for 2026-27, but a $3 billion deficit for 2028-29.

(Elk River, MN) — A Republican from Elk River is mounting a primary challenge against U.S. House Majority Whip and Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer. Mike Foley, a 40-year-old Marine veteran, announced he is running for the seat, saying central Minnesota needs new leadership in Washington, D.C. Foley says his top priorities, if elected, would be addressing affordability, improving access to health care, and implementing term limits as well as restrictions on stock trading for members of Congress.

>>Juvenile Shot Inside Maplewood Mall

(Maplewood, MN) — A juvenile was shot and injured inside Maplewood Mall on Sunday afternoon. Police say a fight broke out between two individuals, and one person shot the other in the hip. The mall closed for the remainder of the day but is expected to reopen today. Two suspects are now in custody.

>>Austin Man Killed in Crash

(Mower County, MN) — A man was killed in a crash early Saturday morning near Austin in Mower County. The collision happened around 2:20 a.m. on Highway 218. A southbound SUV struck a northbound Freightliner, killing the 31-year-old driver from Austin. The driver of the Freightliner was uninjured, but the passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They are both from Canada. The name of the victim has not officially been released.

(Belgrade, MN) — Police are investigating a shooting in Belgrade on Saturday afternoon. A male victim was taken to the hospital, and one person was taken into custody. Authorities say the two knew each other, and there is no threat to the public. No other details have been released.

>>Snowmobiler Airlifted After Crash Near Canyon

(Canyon, MN)– A snowmobiler was airlifted to safety Saturday afternoon after crashing on Trail 51 west of Highway 53 near Canyon. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, a 58-year-old man was riding along the trail when he crested a hill and suddenly came upon an unoccupied snowmobile parked on the path. While trying to avoid a collision, he was thrown from his sled and suffered serious injuries. Emergency responders reached the scene and arranged for the man to be airlifted for medical treatment.

>>Intoxicated Man Arrested for Stabbing Duluth Police Officer in Leg

(Duluth, MN) — Police in Duluth say a man is jailed for stabbing an officer in the leg early Saturday. The report says the man was intoxicated, striking the side of an ambulance and threatening the paramedics inside. Authorities tried to arrest the suspect, but he resisted and stabbed the officer’s leg. The 22-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree assault, fleeing an officer, and other charges. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has a new Farm to Food Security grant program designed to connect local farmers with Minnesotans facing food insecurity. Grant specialist Kaylee Thornley says the state-created program helps organizations buy Minnesota-grown food and distribute it at no cost to those who need it most. She says it not only gets fresh, local food to hungry families, but also strengthens farm communities by keeping those dollars close to home. The legislature established the program during the 2025 session. More details are available on the M-D-A website.

>>Boldy Helps Team USA Beat Canada in Olympic Gold Medal Game

(Milan, IT) — Minnesota Wild forward Matt Boldy scored the first goal in Team U-S-A’s 2-1 win over Canada in the Olympic gold medal game Sunday in Milan. Jack Hughes netted the game-winner in O-T for the U-S. His brother, Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes, assisted on Boldy’s goal and led the U-S with eight points in the Winter Games. Hughes was named the best defenseman at Milano Cortina. Boldy had two goals and two assists, and Brock Faber had a goal and an assist in six games. Jake Guentzel from Woodbury, Brock Nelson of Warroad, Jackson LaCombe from Eden Prairie, and Jake Oettinger of Lakeville also won gold medals in Italy.
