>>State DFL Representatives-Elect Sworn in to Minnesota House Early

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota House Democrats say all state representatives-elect were sworn into office this weekend by a district court judge.   The D-F-L is prepared to deny the 68-member quorum needed to conduct business until a power sharing agreement is accepted by Republicans.   D-F-L House Speaker-designate Melissa Hortman said in a statement, “we have no interest in spending January locked in partisan warfare with House Republicans, but we do not intend to allow them to pretend that 67 votes is a majority and engage in an illegitimate power grab.”   G-O-P House Speaker designate Lisa Demuth argues, “State law is clear: swearing in happens at noon on the day the legislature convenes; any attempt to subvert that is illegitimate.”  She called the move an “unprecedented covert” swearing-in ceremony.

 

>>Minnesota Senate DFL and GOP Reach Power Sharing Agreement

(St. Paul, MN) — Democrats and Republicans in the Minnesota Senate have an agreement in place to govern the work of the chamber while it is temporarily tied.   Each party will have 33 members until a January 28th special election to fill the seat of the late D-F-L Senator Kari Dziedzic of Minneapolis.  Under the agreement, each caucus leader will appoint a co-presiding officer, and Senate committees will have equal representation and joint chairs.   The agreement will remain in place until one party gains a 34th member.   Senators plan to pass a resolution Tuesday when the session opens.

 

>>Partisan Battles Expected in Minnesota House This Sesson

(St. Paul, MN) — Political analysts are expecting heated partisan battles at the Capitol this session, especially in the Minnesota House.   Carleton College Professor Emertius Steven Schier says we are not one Minnesota as Governor Walz suggests, we are two.   He says, “one is conservative and one is progressive. They are bitterly divided on policy and there is mistrust between the two Minnesota’s and that is all coming home to roost in the House of Representatives.”   The G-O-P will have a one-vote majority in the House at least until a January 28th special election.

 

>>Klobuchar Prepares for Presidential Inauguration on January 20th

(Washington, DC) — The 60th Presidential Inauguration is one week from today (1/20) and Senator Amy Klobuchar chairs bipartisan and bicameral Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.   The Minnesota Democrat says, “I have been working to make sure that inauguration works well. It’s part of the peaceful power transfer that’s so important in our country.”   Klobuchar says she still believes what unites us as a nation is bigger than what divides us.   President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect J-D Vance will be sworn in next Monday in front of the U-S Capitol.

 

>>MNsure Deadline is Wednesday Night

(St. Paul, MN) — The deadline to apply for health insurance through the state’s health exchange, MNsure, is approaching.   Minnesotans who want coverage starting February 1st, must apply by 11:59 pm on Wednesday.   After January 15th, most Minnesotans will need a major life change to enroll in health insurance through MNsure.  More information can be found at mnsure.org.

 

>>MPD Mourns Haven, Mounted Patrol Unit Member

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minneapolis Police Department is mourning Haven, a member of the Mounted Patrol Unit.   Haven died on Saturday due to complications following intestinal surgery.   The 16-hand-tall Friesian gelding was born in 2008 and joined the M-P-D Mounted Patrol in 2017.  He was known for his “friendly demeanor and calm strength.”  Haven will be cremated and honored with a memorial service this spring.

 

>>Minneapolis Police Save Infants After Fentanyl ODs

(Minneapolis, MN) — Two infants are alive after suffering fentanyl overdoses in Minneapolis.  Police were called to the report of an unresponsive two-year-old on Saturday.  Officers say the child was brought to a hospital, given Narcan, and is in serious but stable condition.  After learning about the fentanyl exposure, police went back to the residence to take another infant and two-year-old to the hospital.  The baby was given Narcan and C-P-R on the way to the hospital.  The other two-year-old showed no medical complications.   No other details have been released.

 

>>Man Shoots Minneapolis Aldi’s Security Guard

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minneapolis police continue to search for a suspect who shot a security guard inside an Aldi store Friday night.   Officers say the man confronted the security guard and when he attempted to use mace, the man fired multiple shots and fled on foot.  The security guard is in the hospital recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

 

>>Vikings and Rams Face Off in NFC Wild Card Game in Arizona

(Glendale, AZ) — The Minnesota Vikings and L-A Rams play the final game of the wild card playoff round tonight (Mon 7pm) at the Arizona Cardinals stadium.   The first-round N-F-C matchup was moved to suburban Phoenix due to the wildfires burning in Los Angeles.   The 10-and-7 Rams were supposed to get at a home game for winning the N-F-C West.   The Vikings are the first-ever, 14-win wild card playoff team.   L-A beat Minnesota 30-20 at SoFi Stadium in late October.  The winner tonight plays at Philadelphia next Sunday.
