>>Federal Agent Shoots Man in North Minneapolis

(Minneapolis, MN) — The U-S Department of Homeland Security says a man was shot in the leg by a federal immigration agent Wednesday night in north Minneapolis, triggering a tense crowd and protests.  City officials say the man’s injuries are not life-threatening and again called for ICE to leave the state.  D-H-S says the shooting happened after a targeted traffic stop involving a man from Venezuela, who fled, crashed, and struggled with agents before two others joined in with a shovel and broom handle.  The shooting comes one week after an ICE agent killed Renee Good, fueling ongoing protests and lawsuits over the federal surge.

 

>>Walz Condemns Federal Immigration Enforcement in Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Tim Walz is sharply criticizing the ongoing presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota.  During an address Wednesday night, Walz called it, “a campaign of organized brutality against the people of Minnesota by our own federal government.”  The governor warned that the situation could worsen, accusing President Trump of deliberately fueling chaos.  Walz says we must protest, loudly, urgently, but also peacefully.  The governor also criticized the Justice Department for excluding the Minnesota B-C-A from its investigation into the deadly shooting of Renee Good.

 

>>Residents Protesting ICE Activity in Mankato

(Mankato, MN) — People in Mankato are speaking out about the ICE activity in the community.  Around 300 residents expressed their frustrations at Monday night’s city council meeting.  Public Safety Director Jeremy Clifton says they are completely unaware of ICE’s operations.  He says, “Anything that we have really learned has been from social media or from interactions in our community. We have not had any direct contact on anything that Department of Homeland Security or ICE is doing in operations.”  At least one female protester was sprayed in the face with chemical irritant Monday.

 

>>Minnesota’s Largest Employers Under Scrutiny Amid ICE Surge

(Chanhassen, MN) — Minnesota’s biggest companies are feeling mounting pressure as federal immigration enforcement intensifies across the state.  A viral video shows ICE agents escorting a worker into a gray pickup truck behind General Mills’ Chanhassen facility.  The surge of federal immigration activity has created sensitive and complex challenges for businesses of all sizes.  Employers are contending with detained workers, implementing safety protocols, and managing public messaging in an increasingly polarized climate.  Adding to the tension, U-S Border Patrol agents detained and injured two Target employees in Richfield on January 8th, both of whom were U-S citizens.

 

>>All St. Paul Public Schools to Offer Online Learning

(St. Paul, MN) — St. Paul Public Schools will soon offer online learning options for all students, in addition to continuing to provide in-person classes due to ICE activity.   All 69 district schools will close next Tuesday and Wednesday, giving teachers time to develop online curriculum.   The move comes amid growing concerns about increased student absences linked to heightened ICE activity.   In response, the St. Paul school board convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday and voted 5–1 to authorize Superintendent Stacie Stanley to implement the plan.

 

>>Minnesota Senate Subcommittee Public Hearing on Healthcare Access

(St. Paul, MN) — A Senate Select Subcommittee is hosting a public hearing this (Thurs) morning on federal decisions and the impact on healthcare access in Minnesota.  The committee will hear testimony from hospital leaders, healthcare workers, health experts, and state administrators.   One focus will be on how the federal impacts are putting rural healthcare in jeopardy for greater Minnesotans.

 

>>Gopher Women’s Basketball Falls to #3 UCLA

(Minneapolis, MN) — The University of Minnesota women’s basketball team fell to number-three U-C-L-A last night 76-58 at Williams Arena.  The Bruins jumped out to a 17-9 lead and outscored the Golden Gophers in every quarter.  Minnesota senior point guard Amaya Battle had 16 points and seven rebounds.  The Gophers dipped to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten.  U-C-L-A is 16-1 and 6-0 in conference play.  Minnesota plays Sunday at Washington.
