(Mankato, MN) — Governor Tim Walz is heading to Mankato today (Thurs 12:30pm) to announce his new infrastructure plan. The governor says his bonding proposal will focus on creating jobs, protecting clean drinking water, investing in a new State Patrol headquarters and money for flood mitigation and prevention. The governor’s plan also includes $10 million to support Rapidan Dam recovery after it failed during flooding last summer.

(St. Paul, MN) — The state Supreme Court will hear oral arguments today (Thurs 1 pm) in the lawsuits over what constitutes a quorum in the Minnesota House. D-F-L leaders are asking the high court to rule that 68 members are needed to conduct business in the House and that the election of Representative Lisa Demuth as House speaker was illegitimate. G-O-P leaders petitioned the court to deny or dismiss the case. House Democrats have refused to show up at the Capitol until Republicans accept a power sharing agreement. The G-O-P has a one-vote majority pending a special election in House District 40-B.

(Undated) — The latest numbers show Minnesota hunters harvested more than 170 thousand deer during the 2024 season. The D-N-R’s Todd Froberg says it is a seven-percent increase from last year and three percent lower than the five-year mean. He says the harvest was a little bit higher than he expected based on the conservative bag limits. Froberg believes last year’s warm winter helped increase deer populations, especially in northeastern Minnesota.

(Center City, MN) — A man from Chisago County will spend up to 32-and-a-half years in prison for the October 2023 killing of his wife and shooting at a deputy. Prosecutors say 40-year-old Mike Carda of Fish Lake Township was sentenced Wednesday for the second-degree murder of 35-year-old Sarah Jane Carda and the attempted murder and assault of a peace officer. Deputies say they arrived at the scene and could hear arguing before shots rang out from inside the home. Several shots were fired at the deputy through a window. A drone was used to get inside, and it showed Carda with several guns and his wife lying on a bed. She died at the scene.

(Duluth, MN) — The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drug-related shooting that injured a 19-year-old woman in Duluth Township. Deputies say the victim and a 17-year-old boy went to meet a 19-year-old man Tuesday evening and during the encounter he fired several rounds into their vehicle. The woman was taken to a Duluth hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to her foot. Officers say the suspect was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of assault, reckless discharge of a firearm, and theft of a firearm. Authorities searched his residence and located a handgun and other evidence from the shooting.

(Rochester, MN) — A pedestrian is dead following a crash in Rochester Wednesday night. According to the Rochester Police Department, the victim was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle around 5:40 pm. Reports indicate the man was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk. The driver of the vehicle stopped after the incident and is cooperating with police.

(Preston, MN) — A woman charged in connection with a deadly buggy crash in Fillmore County is scheduled to appear in court today. A settlement conference for Samantha Petersen will take place this afternoon in Preston, although attorneys indicate that no final agreement has been reached. Investigators report that Petersen was driving when her vehicle struck an Amish buggy in September 2023, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to two others. She is facing 17 charges, including criminal vehicular homicide.

(Dallas, TX) — The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a two-game skid with a 115-114 win over the Mavericks Wednesday night in Dallas. Jaden McDaniels led the Wolves with 27 points and Anthony Edwards scored 21. McDaniels made a free-throw with three seconds remaining to give Minnesota a four-point lead before Kyrie Irving hit a three-pointer as time expired. The Wolves are back home Saturday to face the Denver Nuggets.
