>>Clark’s Victory in District 60 Give Democrats Back Control of Minnesota Senate

(Minneapolis, MN) — A big win in Tuesday’s special election in Minneapolis gives Democrats back control of the Minnesota Senate.   D-F-L candidate Doron Clark topped Republican Abigail Wolters by a 91-to-9 percent margin in the Senate District 60 race.   Clark fills the seat of the late Senator Kari Dziedzic, who died of cancer in December.   Republicans and Democrats were tied with 33 members in the Senate.   The D-F-L regains its one-vote majority for the remainder of the session.

 

>>House DFL Leader Hopes to Reach Power Sharing Agreement This Week

(St. Paul, MN) — The Democratic leader in the Minnesota House is optimistic about a powering sharing agreement, but the Republican leader is not as hopeful.   D-F-L Speaker-designate Melissa Hortman says, ” I think we’re making progress. Failure is not an option so we’ll keep meeting until we have an agreement and my hope is that will happen this week.”   G-O-P Speaker-designate Lisa Demuth told reporters, “There’s been a lot of conversation, but you don’t keep offering the same thing and expect that to look like a new deal.”   Republicans say it is tough to negotiate when Democrats are not showing up at the Capitol.   The G-O-P currently has a 67-66 majority in the House, but that could change pending a special election in District 40-B.

 

>>Temps Soar Into the 50s in Southern Minnesota, Twin Cities Ties Record of 47

(Chanhassen, MN) — The National Weather Service says some areas of southern Minnesota reported record-high temperatures on Tuesday.   The Twin Cities tied the record of 47 degrees set in 1892.   The mercury reached 54 degrees in St. James, 52 in Austin and Windom, 51 degrees in Owatonna and Worthington, and 50 in Rochester, Mankato and Marshall.   Forecasters say it could be even warmer on Thursday.

 

>>Final Voting Begins for MnDOT’s ‘Name a Snowplow’ Contest

(Roseville, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is out with the list of finalists in the fifth annual ‘Name a Snowplow’ contest.   MnDOT’s Anne Meyer says they received more than 73-hundred submissions and narrowed it down to 50.   She says there are sports-themed names, some popular events, and Bob Dylan seems to be popular this year.   Meyer says you can vote once for up to eight names through February 7th on the MnDOT website.   The submissions include “Plowin’ In The Wind,” “Bob Chillin,” ” Anthony Sledwards,” “SKOL Plow,” “Snowtorious B-I-G, ” and “We’re Off To See The Blizzard.”

 

>>New Hope Police Arrest 6 Suspects for Pipe Assault at Basketball Game

(New Hope, MN) — Police in New Hope are investigating a pipe attack that happened during a Cooper High School boys basketball game Tuesday night.   Robbinsdale Area Schools says six people entered the gym during the game and assaulted a Fridley player on the bench with a pipe.   The other players were moved to a safe place and the gym was placed on lockdown.   Officers arrested six suspects as they left the school.   District officials say they are not Cooper High School students.

 

>>Volunteer Registration Opens for 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities

(Blaine, MN) — Volunteer registration opens today (Wed) for the 3-M Open at the T-P-C Twin Cities this summer.   Officials say Minnesota’s annual P-G-A Tour event requires more than 16-hundred volunteers to be a successful tournament.   Opportunities range from assisting golfers to enhancing the fan experience.   This year’s 3-M Open is July 21st through July 27th in Blaine.

 

>>Minnesota Wild Forward Kaprizov to Undergo Surgery

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota Wild All-Star forward Kirill Kaprizov will undergo surgery for a lower body injury and is expected to be off the ice at least a month.   Kaprizov missed 12 games due to this injury and returned for three games before being shut down again.   He leads the Wild in scoring with 23 goals and 29 assists in 37 games this season.   Wild G-M Bill Guerin said they hope to have Kaprizov back for the final playoff push.  Minnesota plays tonight (Wed 6pm) at Toronto.
