(St. Paul, MN) — The Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota is sealing a historic Centennial Time Capsule today (Tues) in St. Paul. Minnesota Commander John Walker says the state D-A-V was started by World War I veterans on July 1st, 1925. He says, “We will be sealing this time capsule at the State Capitol to preserve the legacy and the values and the impact of Minnesota veterans to our future generations.” Walker says it will be opened 100 years from now. Chapters from Minneapolis, St. Paul, Hibbing, Askov, Duluth, and Bemidji are putting artifacts in the time capsule.

(Duluth, MN) – The Minnesota Nurses Association says 400 advanced practice providers across 70 Essentia Health clinics and hospitals filed formal notice of an unfair labor practice strike, set to begin July 10th. Nurse practitioner Sara McCumber accuses Essentia of refusing to bargain in good faith, saying the health system has “continually broken the law by refusing to come to the bargaining table” and committing additional unfair labor practices. She also points out that the union election notice “specifically requires Essentia to bargain with the certified A-P-P union—even during an appeals process.” Essentia Health is challenging the structure of the bargaining unit and says it is acting within its legal rights.

(St. Paul, MN) – A new law taking effect today (7/1) makes lane splitting and lane filtering legal for motorcyclists in Minnesota—under specific conditions. Lane splitting allows a motorcycle to pass between vehicles moving in the same direction, as long as traffic is flowing and the rider stays under 25 miles per hour. Lane filtering is now permitted when other vehicles are stopped or barely moving, if the motorcycle doesn’t exceed 15 miles per hour above surrounding traffic. They are only allowed on roadways with two or more lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction.

(Renville, MN) — A motorcyclist from Olivia is hospitalized with serious injuries suffered in a crash Sunday night near Renville. The Renville County Sheriff’s Office says 22-year-old Jacob Haney was riding on County Road 6 when he left the road, lost control, and was thrown from his cycle. Deputies say Haney was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.

The State Climatology Office says the preliminary tornado count through the end of June stands at 48 — already surpassing the state’s average of 46 tornadoes for an entire season. June is typically the most active month for tornadoes in Minnesota, averaging 14 each year, followed by July with 12, and August with about six. Minnesota’s worst tornado season between 1950 and 2020 was in 2010, when the state recorded 113 tornadoes.

Minneapolis landed at number 72 while St. Paul followed closely at 77.
