>>Federal Prosecutors Seek ‘Complex’ Case Status in Boelter Trial

(St. Paul, MN) — Federal prosecutors in the Vance Boelter trial are asking a judge to designate the case as “complex,” citing the massive volume of evidence involved—potentially hundreds of thousands of pages.  The request would allow six months of preparation time that wouldn’t count against the Speedy Trial Act.  Boelter was indicted on six charges in the killings of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the shootings of Senator John Hoffman of Champlin and his wife.

 

>>1800 Students Marching to State Capitol for Education Rally

(St. Paul, MN) — More than 18-hundred Minnesota students will march to the state Capitol today (Wed) to hold a rally for public education.   Emanuell Williams of the Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota says, “youth voice is important right now. You know our young folks do not need to wait until they’re adults.”  Williams says Minnesota lawmakers are invited to the rally, and he hopes they show up to hear student concerns about state cuts to public education.

 

>>Political Analysts say Mitchell Resignation Won’t Change Control of Senate

(Eagan, MN) — Control of the Minnesota Senate is not expected to change following the resignation of D-F-L Senator Nicole Mitchell.  Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier  says District 47 in the Woodbury/Maplewood area tends to vote Democratic.  He says, “Mitchell won with 58 percent of the vote in 2022. Both state representatives from her districts are DFLers and one of those representatives is running to replace her in the Senate.”  Schier predicts a Republican candidate will win the District 29 seat of the late Senator Bruce Anderson of Buffalo.  The D-F-L currently has a one-vote majority in the Senate.

 

>>Authorities ID Occupants in Deadly Plane Crash near Granite Falls Airport

(Granite Falls, MN) — Authorities in Yellow Medicine County are identifying the two occupants in a deadly plane crash Monday near the Granite Falls Municipal Airport.  Deputies say first responders found 43-year-old Mark Ruff of Dallas, Texas on the side of the road receiving medical treatment.  The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office says the other occupant – 49-year-old David Dacus of San Francisco – died at the scene.  The plane was having engine troubles before it crashed near Highway 23.  The F-A-A and National Transportation Safety Board are at the site and will be moving the plane’s wreckage to another location for an examination.

 

>>Near Mid-Air Collision Blamed on Communication Breakdown

(Minot, ND) — Minot Air Force Base officials say poor communication may have led to a near mid-air collision last Friday between a B-52 bomber and a SkyWest commercial flight.  The B-52 was performing a scheduled flyover at the North Dakota State Fair.  According to Minot public affairs, flight plans were properly filed for the military aircraft, but base officials were not informed of an inbound SkyWest flight arriving from Minneapolis.  The SkyWest pilot made an evasive maneuver, and no injuries were reported.  The F-A-A and Air Force are still investigating.

 

>>Military Medics Train for Combat Care at Camp Ripley

(Little Falls, MN) — Airmen from the National Guard’s 133rd and 148th Medical Groups and soldiers from the Distribution Support Battalion are taking part today (Wed) in Tactical Combat Casualty Care at Camp Ripley in Little Falls.  The course prepares medics to deliver lifesaving care in high-threat environments, simulating battlefield conditions and trauma scenarios.  Airmen and soldiers will train side-by-side, building readiness and resilience for modern warfare.

 

>>Michigan Man Sentenced to 225 Months for Fatally Stabbing Duluth Woman

(Duluth, MN) — A Michigan man could spend more than 18 years in prison for the stabbing death of a woman in Duluth last April.  St. Louis County prosecutors say 35-year-old Darrius Plummer received a 225-month sentence Tuesday for the second-degree murder of 26-year-old Chantel Moose.  Plummer was found guilty in May of stabbing Moose in the neck while she was standing outside a bar.  He fled the area and was later arrested by U-S marshals in Michigan.

 

>>Bond Set at $500K for Thief River Falls Woman Accused in Child Assault

(Thief River Falls, MN) — A Thief River Falls woman is being held on $500,000 dollars bond after allegedly attempting to cut a child’s throat.  Thirty-four-year-old Edwina Stoutenburgh is charged with attempted second-degree murder without intent and assault.  Court documents say she tried to cut the child’s neck with a dull knife.  At the hospital, Stoutenburgh reportedly told staff that “demons inside her” took over and that she wanted to kill her children.  Police later found a knife with what appeared to be blood on it in the kitchen sink after her husband allowed a search of their home.

 

>>MPCA Issues Air Alert for Northwest Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN) — Northwest Minnesota is under another air quality alert from now (Wed) through Friday at 11 p-m due to Canadian wildfire smoke.  The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says air quality is expected to reach the red level in the air quality index, meaning the air is unhealthy for everyone in this area.  The D-N-R says burning permits will not be issued and campfires are discouraged in that part of the state.  The affected area includes East Grand Forks, Roseau, and the Tribal Nations of Red Lake and White Earth.

 

>>Minnesota Livestock Producers Urged to Watch for New World Screwworm

(Maple Plain, MN) — Agriculture officials in the Upper Midwest are warning livestock producers not to overlook the threat of New World Screwworm, a devastating pest that could impact regional herds.  Despite its tropical origins, experts say the pest could survive in the region’s summer climate.  Kaitlyn Root of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association says producers need to stay alert—even though current outbreaks are in Mexico.  Root warns, “We will be affected—especially if screwworm reaches the U-S and cattle movements stop or look different.”

 

>>Minnesota Lynx Cruise Past Chicago Sky at Target Center

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx are 21-and-4 after a 91-68 win over the Chicago Sky Tuesday night at Target Center.  Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride both had 19 points, and all five Minnesota starters scored in double figures.  The Lynx are now 13-and-0 on their home court this season.  Chicago falls to 7-and-16.  The Las Vegas Aces come to downtown Minneapolis on Friday night.

 

>>Twins Top Dodgers in Game 2 in Los Angeles

(Los Angeles, CA) — The Twins topped the Dodgers 10-7 Tuesday night in L-A to even the series at one game each.  Royce Lewis and Christian Vasquez both had three R-B-Is for Minnesota and Carlos Correa went two-for-three with four runs scored.  Starting pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson allowed three runs over three innings and Brock Stewart pitched a scoreless fifth inning to pick up the win.  Right-hander Chris Paddack is on the mound for the rubber match this afternoon (Wed 3pm) at Dodger Stadium.
