>>State Patrol Provides Details on Man Caught Trespassing 3 Times at Capitol

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota State Patrol is releasing details about the arrest of a man who was removed from the State Capitol three times.  An alarm system alerted Capitol Security late Friday night that someone was inside the Senate and 36-year-old Dominic Peace was found naked and nonviolent.  He was taken to Regions Hospital for a mental health evaluation and released.  Peace was seen outside the Capitol at 7:30 Saturday morning and again taken to Regions and released.  Troopers arrested him at 7:30 Saturday night when he showed up at the State Capitol a third time.  Investigators say there are no indications that Peace broke into the building.  Peace was booked on an arrest warrant out of Wisconsin and is awaiting extradition.

 

>>Lawmakers Want Answers After Intruder Found in Senate Chamber

(St. Paul, MN) — State lawmakers say they want answers after an intruder was found in the Senate chamber of the state Capitol Friday night into Saturday morning.  Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth says, “it’s frustrating that an individual with a criminal history was able to allegedly vandalize the capitol and unlawfully trespass in the Senate chamber without being taken into custody.”  She adds, “Anyone who trespasses in any building – let alone the state capitol — should be arrested and prosecuted for breaking the law.”  Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said, ” I expect the State Patrol and Capitol Security teams will thoroughly review what happened and give assurances that this will not happen again.”

 

>>Klobuchar Celebrates Storm Recovery Efforts in Beltrami County

(Bemidji, MN) — U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar is celebrating the storm recovery efforts in the Beltrami County area in northern Minnesota.  Klobuchar and Bemidji’s fire chief, police chief and mayor announced Saturday announced, “Bemidji is open for business.”  She visited Bemidji to recognize how the community has come together to clean up and rebuild since late June.  Klobuchar said it was one of the worst storms we’ve seen in our state, straight line winds, lost millions of trees.  The National Weather Service determined the microburst storm had straight line wind speeds reaching 120 miles per hour and left a ten-mile path of damage.

 

>>Severe Storms Bring Strong Winds, Hail, Flooding and Tornado

(Chanhassen, MN) — Many parts of the state are cleaning up after severe thunderstorms rumbled across Minnesota on Sunday.  The National Weather Service reports a tornado was spotted south of Appleton near the Minnesota River in Lac qui Parle County.  There were wind gusts of 71 miles per hour near De Graff in Swift County,  66 in St. Paul, 63 at Starbuck in Pope County,  and 61 mile per hour guts near Buffalo in Wright County.  Power poles and trees were downed in Chippewa County, Hennepin County, and the Iron Range, and grain bins were buckled near Sunburg in Kandiyohi County.  Plymouth and Ramsey reported 1.75-inch hail, 1.25 inch hail stones fell near Litchfield, and there was one inch hail in Yellow Medicine and Lakeville.  Flash flooding occurred in Stevens, Ramsey, and Pope counties.

 

>>8-Year-Old Brooklyn Center Boy Drowns on Lake Independence

(Maple Plain, MN) — An eight-year-old boy from Brooklyn Center is the victim of drowning on Lake Independence in Maple Plain.  The Hennepin County Sheriff’s office says the boy was on a field trip to Baker Park South Beach Thursday when a teacher found him in about three feet of water.  The medical examiner’s report says Karmen Conneh was taken to Children’s Hospital but died on Friday night of cardiopulmonary arrest due to freshwater drowning.  The incident is still under investigation.

 

>>Authorities ID 2 Minnesota Teens Killed in Wisconsin Crash

(DeForest, WI) — Two west-central Minnesota teens have died following a head-on crash in Wisconsin.  Authorities say 19-year-old Brady Heiling of Clara City passed away Friday after nearly a week in critical care.  His passenger, 18-year-old Hallie Helgeson of Montevideo, died shortly after the July 20th crash on I-90 near DeForest.  Officers say their vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver.  Both teens were recent high school graduates and multi-sport athletes.  A scholarship fund has been created in Helgeson’s memory.

 

>>West Nile Virus Cases in Minnesota About a Month Early

(Plymouth, MN) — It’s been a terrible summer for mosquitoes, and now experts are seeing signs of West Nile virus even earlier.  Alex Carlson with the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District says the cases of West Nile are here about a month early. He says the culex tarsalis species is most responsible for transmission to humans of West Nile virus and they’ve had a good year because of the rain and hot, humid conditions.  Carlson says one way to cut down on the number of mosquitoes is to remove any stagnant water on your property.

 

>>Minnesota to Increase Fees for Missed Driving Tests

(St. Paul, MN) — Starting Friday, Minnesota’s Driver, and Vehicle Services (DVS) will double the fee for drivers who miss their scheduled road tests without notice.  The no-show penalty will rise from $20 to $40.  In addition, a new $20 fee will apply to cancellations made between 24 and 72 hours before the test.  Those who cancel less than 24 hours in advance will also face the $40 charge.  D-V-S says the changes aim to reduce the high number of missed appointments.  So far this year, nearly 1 in 5 test-takers have failed to show up without notice.

 

>>E-Z Pass Lanes Closed on Interstate 394

(Roseville, MN) — A reminder to Monday morning commuters.  The E-Z pass lanes on Interstate 394 between Golden Valley and Minneapolis were closed Sunday night and will remain closed through November while crews complete a two-year project to repair bridges and ramps along I-394 and I-94.  The E-Z pass lanes will reopen during the months of November and February.

 

>>Kitayama Wins 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities

(Blaine, MN) — Kurt Kitayama is the winner of the 3-M Open at the T-P-C Twin Cities course in Blaine.  The 32-year-old California native captured his second career title on the P-G-A Tour after being catapulted by a course record 11-under-par round of 60 on Saturday.  He birdied six of the first eight holes in Sunday’s final round to help seal the victory.  Kitayama said the fans in Minnesota were awesome and the course is in amazing shape.  This was the seventh year of the P-G-A Tour holding an event at the T-P-C Twin Cities course.  Sam Stevens finished second.

 

>>Atlanta Dream Hand Minnesota Lynx First Home Loss of Season

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Atlanta Dream beat the Minnesota Lynx 90-86 Sunday night at Target Center.  It was the first home loss of the season for the 22-and-5 Lynx.  The 15-and-10 Dream had a 48-32 halftime lead and Minnesota was unable to rally back.  Brittney Griner led Atlanta with 22 points and Jordin Canada had 18.  Napheesa Collier scored a game-high 32 points for the Lynx and Alanna Smith added 12.  The New York Liberty come to town Wednesday night for a rematch of the W-B-N-A Finals.
