>>Governor Walz Visits Hospital to Discuss Impact of Medicaid Cuts

(Maplewood, MN) — Governor Tim Walz is visiting a Twin Cities hospital today (Wed) to discuss the anticipated impacts that federal Medicaid cuts would have on health care for Minnesotans.  The visit comes on the 60th anniversary of the signing of Medicaid and Medicare into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.  State budget officials estimate that more than 140,000 Minnesotans will lose their health insurance, and the cuts could cost the state more than one billion dollars in the first four years of the federal budget.  Governor Walz will be joined by economic and medical experts.

 

>>Republicans Criticize Prison Release of Rochester Axe Murder Brom

(St. Paul, MN) — Republican lawmakers are criticizing the release of Rochester axe murderer David Brom from the Lino Lakes state prison.  Fifty-three-year-old Brom was convicted of the 1988 killings of his parents and sister and brother when he was age 16 and sentenced to life in prison.  But a new state law allows juvenile offenders to be fully eligible for parole after 15 years.  G-O-P Senator Jordan Rasmusson of Fergus Falls offered an amendment that would have required minors to serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for release.  Rasmusson said in a statement, “the Democrats’ soft-on-crime approach has led to dangerous early releases like this one.”

 

>>DFLers say Trump Administration Releasing $74 Million in School Funding

(Eagan, MN) — Congresswoman Angie Craig says the Trump administration is releasing more than 70 million dollars in funding that had been illegally withheld from Minnesota schools.  The state’s congressional Democrats sent a letter to the U-S Department of Education expressing concern about the withholding of 74 million in previously appropriated funding from Minnesota, local school districts, and students.  They wrote, “Our communities, schools, educators, and students in Minnesota and in every corner of the nation will suffer without these federal education investments.”

 

>>Task Force 1 Providing Details on 2-Week Deployment to Texas

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota Task Force 1 is back home and providing details about its two-week deployment to help with flood search efforts in Texas.  Manager Brian Plantz says their mission involved using K-9s to help search through rubble piles for any missing people.  Plantz says a lot of the skills and knowledge they had for applicable for the mission, but the scale of the devastation is something they couldn’t train for.  Task Force 1 spent two weeks in Texas helping after the July 4th weekend flooding that killed at least 136 people.

 

>>U of M College of Veterinary Medicine Using $5 Million Grant for new Clinic

(St. Paul, MN) — The U of M College of Veterinary Medicine is using a five-million-dollar grant to help students gain vital clinical experience.  Dean Laura Molgaard says construction on a new spectrum of care clinic is underway on the St. Paul campus right next to the Veterinary Medical Center.  She says veterinary students will have the opportunity to lead the care in a real clinic setting.  The new U of M vet clinic is expected to open later this year.

 

>>ICE Wants to Deport Drunk Driver Who Killed 2 Minnesota Teens in Wisconsin

(Madison, WI) — ICE wants to deport a Wisconsin driver charged with being drunk and causing a crash that killed two Minnesota teens.  Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila is charged in Dane County Circuit Court with two counts of homicide by use of a vehicle.  Martinez-Avila allegedly was driving drunk the wrong way on a Wisconsin interstate and cause a crash that killed 19-year-old Brady Heiling of Clara City and 18-year-old Hallie Helgeson of Montevideo.  Martinez-Avila’s criminal history in Wisconsin includes two convictions for drunken driving and three of driving without a license.  ICE lodged an arrest detainer on Sunday against Martinez-Avila, who is a Honduran national.

 

>>Man Rescued After Being Trapped in Grain Bin in Wilkin County

(Campbell, MN) — Authorities in Wilkin County say a man was rescued Monday afternoon after being trapped in a grain bin for more than an hour.  The sheriff’s office says the man had already been trapped for about 30 minutes before he was able to call for help.  He was submerged in corn up to his waist and reported experiencing leg pain.  His son worked quickly to shovel corn away from him while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.  First responders used specialized grain bin rescue equipment to safely extract the man from the center of the bin.  No additional details about his condition have been released.

 

>>Motorcyclist Injured After Swerving to Avoid SUV in Meeker County

(Darwin, MN) — A motorcyclist from Hutchinson is injured after swerving Tuesday afternoon to avoid a collision with an S-U-V in Meeker County.  The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened just after 4:00 p.m. on Highway 12 in Darwin.  Forty-nine-year-old Carl Melin was riding eastbound when he swerved to avoid an S-U-V entering the intersection from County Road 14.  The two vehicles did not collide.  Melin was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The S-U-V driver was not hurt.

 

>>Flandrau State Park Swim Pond Closes Early for 2025 Season

(New Ulm, MN) — The popular sand-bottom swim pond at Flandrau State Park in New Ulm is closed for the remainder of the 2025 season.  Originally scheduled to remain open through August 17th, the swim pond is now closed due to operational needs at the park.  The D-N-R expressed regret over the schedule change and acknowledged the inconvenience to visitors.  While the pond is closed, the nearby beach house will remain open, providing continued access to restrooms and drinking water.

>>Minnesota Lynx Host Defending WNBA Champion New York Liberty

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx play the New York Liberty tonight (Wed 7pm) at Target Center in a rematch of the W-N-B-A Finals.  The 22-and-5 Lynx are coming off a 90-86 home loss to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday.  Napheesa Collier scored 32 points but didn’t get much help on offense.  The 17-and-8 Liberty fell to the Wings 92-82 Monday night in Dallas.  New York forward Breanna Stewart is out with a lower leg injury.  The Liberty beat the Lynx three games-to-two last year’s W-B-N-A Finals.

 

>>Twins Place Buxton on 10-Day DL with Rib Inflammation

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton is on the 10-day Injured list with ribcage inflammation.  Buxton left Saturday’s game against Washington due to the rib injury.  He’s hitting .282 with 23 home runs, 59 R-B-I, and has 17 stolen bases.  The Twins reinstated catcher Ryan Jeffers from the Paternity List before Tuesday’s 8-5 loss to the Red Sox.  Minnesota and Boston play the rubber match of the series this afternoon (Wed 1pm) at Target Field.
