>>Day 2 of Duluth Area Nurses Strike Against Essentia Health

(Duluth, MN) —  Today (Wed) is day two of the nurses and health care workers strike at multiple locations in Duluth and Superior.  The workers are holding an unfair labor practice strike against Essentia Health with picket lines across the region.  The Minnesota Nurses Association says it offered seven dates for negotiating sessions to Essentia management, but they refused to meet.  The nurses are asking for improvement in staffing and safety on the job.

 

>>Lieutenant Governor Flanagan Joins Striking Health Care Workers in Stillwater

(Stillwater, MN) — Minnesota Lieutnenant Governor Peggy Flanagan is joining striking HealthPartners workers this morning (Wed 10am) for a rally in Stillwater.  The Stillwater Medical Group healthcare workers are holding their second day of a four-day unfair labor practice strike.  Pay is one of the major sticking points of this strike.  A negotiating session was held on Tuesday, but the issues were not resolved.

 

>>Political Analysts say Trump Budget is Too Big to Comprehend

(St. Paul, MN) — Political analysts say the new federal budget is too big for most people to comprehend.  Professor Steve Schier of Carleton College says it would take days to sort through and figure out what all the effects of this legislation will be.  He says the devil is in the details, and most people are not going to have time to sit down and sort through it.  Republicans say it makes tax cuts permanent, cuts wasteful spending, and secures our border.  Democrats argue the Trump budget slashes Medicaid funding and food assistance for millions of Americans.

 

>>MSP Among Select Airports to No Longer Require Shoe Removal

(Minneapolis, MN) — Travelers to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport will be able to save a little time during security screening.  The Transportation Security Administration is rolling out a new policy that will allow passengers to keep their shoes on at security checkpoints.  Passengers in general screening lines, not just those with T-S-A PreCheck, will be able to keep their shoes on at select airports including M-S-P.  The T-S-A began requiring shoe removal in 2006, five years after a man attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes on a flight.

 

>>Minnesota State University Moorhead Updates Logo, Mark, Name

(Moorhead, MN) — Minnesota State University-Moorhead (MSUM) is debuting a new look with a university logo and mark change.  The college says the single-color logo replaces the two-tone red and gray “M” with a flame and prefers to be known as “Minnesota State Moorhead,” or “Moorhead” for short.  Officials say the transition is the culmination of a yearlong brand refresh meant to modernize and align with M-S-U-M’s visual identity.

 

>>Nominations Open for “Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota” Contest

(St. Paul, MN) — Nominations are now open for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce’s “Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota” contest.  Spokesperson Anne Yoder says Minnesota companies have a long history of innovation, and the contest is a great way to show off those businesses.  Any product that is manufactured in Minnesota is eligible for nomination.  Head to the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce website to nominate a product. Nominations close August 15th.

 

>>Duluth Man Sentenced to 4 Years for Drive-By Shooting in September 2024

(Duluth, MN) — A Duluth man is sentenced to four years in prison for a drive-by shooting last September.  The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office says 43-year-old Justin Miller pleaded guilty to a dangerous weapons charge in May.  Witnesses told police they saw Miller point a long gun out of the window of a vehicle and fire a shot into a home.  Bullet holes were located in the alleged victim’s bedroom wall and the leg of a bedframe.  Investigators say the victim’s parents had taken out a restraining order against Miller, who is their uncle.

 

>>Man Stuck in St. Paul Sewers for 4 Days Rescued

(St. Paul, MN) — The St. Paul Fire Department says crews rescued a man Tuesday who spent four days underground in a sewer.  The city’s Advanced Technical Rescue Team was called to the report of a person in a sewer opening needing help.  The team used a rope rescue system to pull the man ten to 12 feet out of the ground.  He was brought to a hospital for evaluation and first responders say he was alert and conscious upon rescue.

 

>>Duluth Cooking Fire Causes $15K in Damages

(Duluth, MN) — Fire officials say a cooking fire at a Duluth home on Tuesday is estimated to have caused 15 thousand dollars in damage.  Crews responded to the home on a report of a structure fire around 5:58 p.m.  The resident was safely evacuated, and no one was injured.

 

>>General Mills Debuts ‘Bacon-Flavored’ Cereal

(Golden Valley, MN) — General Mills is putting a twist on the cereal market.  The Golden Valley-based company is debuting a bacon-flavored Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.  General Mills and Austin-based Hormel Black Label bacon are partnering up on the concoction, a cereal infused with smoky bacon flavor and “blasted with cinnadust.”  It is available exclusively on Walmart-dot-com starting today.

 

>>Minnesota Lynx Play Matinee at Phoenix Mercury

(Phoenix, AZ) — The Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury play a matinee today (Wed 2:30pm) in Arizona.  The 17-and-2 Lynx are coming off back-to-back wins over Chicago and Golden State at Target Center on Saturday and Sunday.  The 13-and-6 Mercury beat the Dallas Wings 102-72 Monday night at home.  Phoenix signed six-time All-Star forward Dewanna Bonner Tuesday after she was waived by the Indiana Fever.

 

>>Minnesota Twins Blow Out Chicago Cubs in Series Opener at Target Field

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Twins blew out the Chicago Cubs 8-1 in the series opener Tuesday night at Target Field.  Ryan Jeffers, Willi Castro, and Harrison Bader all hit home runs for Minnesota in a six-run eighth inning.  Simeon Woods Richardson pitched five scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season.  David Festa is scheduled to start tonight (Wed 6:40pm) against Cubs right-hander Cade Horton.  The Twins have won five of their last six home games.
