(Grand Marais, MN) – Authorities in northeastern Minnesota say U-S Border Patrol agents arrested two people during a traffic stop Monday near Grand Marais. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says the vehicle was pulled over because the owner had an overstayed visa. A passenger was also arrested for being out of visa status. Both were taken to the Duluth Border Patrol station for administrative processing for immigration violations.

(Mahnomen, MN) – Two men are jailed in northwest Minnesota after being arrested during a stolen vehicle investigation in Mahnomen County. Sheriff’s deputies located the car Monday near Roy Lake. Authorities say two suspects tried to flee the scene but were pursued and taken into custody. More than 11 grams of methamphetamine, 41 hundred dollars in cash, and an AR-style rifle were seized. The 28-year-old man from Onamia and 23-year-old Mahnomen man are awaiting charges.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Police say a man is in custody after a nearly eight-hour standoff Tuesday in south Minneapolis. Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt says deputies were serving a felony arrest warrant when the 31-year-old suspect fired a weapon at them multiple times. There was a child and woman inside the apartment, and they were able to get out safely. Investigators say the man also shot down a law enforcement drone. The suspect was later arrested without incident and no injuries were reported.

(Aitkin County, MN) — The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office reports a 47-year-old man drowned in an area lake over the weekend. Neighbors reported hearing a man struggling Sunday afternoon in Gun Lake, which is about 45 miles northeast of Brainerd. Authorities identified the victim as Randy Benson of Isanti. A 9-1-1 caller reported seeing the victim attempting to save a dog at the time he went under. Benson’s body was recovered after a 15-minute search. C-P-R efforts could not revive him.

The nearby Loon Fire has grown to 16 acres following updated mapping and is now 50 percent contained as firefighters continue mop-up efforts. Meanwhile, the Buck Fire north of Tower remains small at about a quarter-acre. Rain and thunderstorms have limited aircraft access, but officials say the weather could help suppress the blaze naturally. There are currently no closures tied to the fires, although the public is urged to stay away from active fire areas and keep drones grounded.

(North Star Township, MN) — Several area fire departments responded to a house fire Tuesday night on Little Alden Lake northeast of Duluth. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says the homeowner smelled smoke and discovered it coming from the home’s air exchanger before everyone safely evacuated. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the entryway and a basement room, along with smoke damage throughout the home. No injuries were reported.
