(Minneapolis, MN) — Federal prosecutors have reached a plea agreement with Vance Boelter, who is now expected to plead guilty in last summer’s deadly attacks targeting two Minnesota lawmakers and their families. Under the proposed deal, the Justice Department says it will not seek the death penalty. Boelter is charged with posing as a police officer before fatally shooting former House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their Brooklyn Park home last June. Investigators say he also shot Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their house in Champlin. Separate state charges remain pending against Boelter while the federal case moves ahead.

(St. Paul, MN) — A resolution passed unanimously by the St. Paul City Council on Wednesday proclaims Sunday June 14th as Mark, Melissa, and Gilbert Hortman Day. Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy of St. Paul said we all lost someone dear to us. Murphy told members, “And I think it is important for us to separate the tragedy of the assassination, and the attempted assassination of Senator (John) Hoffman and his family, from the beautiful and meaningful life and all of what Speaker Hortman meant to all of us.” Hortman, her husband, and dog were killed on June 14th of last year.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says the city is seeking assistance following a new report indicating Operation Metro Surge caused 700 million dollars in lost economic activity. He says, “We’re going to do our part at the City of Minneapolis; neighbors have consistently done their part in protecting people. And at the same time, yes, we need help from the federal level, from the state.” Frey says the city has put forward ten million dollars in emergency rental assistance and small business support. An earlier report showed federal immigration enforcement had a 203-million-dollar impact on Minneapolis in January alone.

The G-O-P report blamed Walz and Ellison for the systematic failure to safeguard taxpayer money from fraud. Republican Congressman Tom Emmer said, “If these allegations are true, Tim Walz and Keith Ellison should leave office in handcuffs.” A spokesman for Governor Walz said, “They continue to rehash COVID-era fraud to distract from endless wars, gas prices, ICE, and the president’s insider trading.”

(Brooklyn Center, MN) – A man indicted for stealing 4.2 million dollars in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme two years ago is now in federal custody. The U-S Attorney’s Office says 47-year-old Said Abdullahi Ereg surrendered to the F-B-I Wednesday at M-S-P Airport. They were offering a 150-thousand-dollar reward for information that led to his arrest. Prosecutors say Ereg enrolled his south Minneapolis grocery and deli in the federal child nutrition program and falsely claimed to serve 1.4 million meals to kids in need.

(Washington DC) — Federal officials are making nearly $193 million available to help communities prevent and end youth homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that the funding will support housing-focused solutions for vulnerable young people across the country. The money can be used to improve local response systems and create transitional housing programs paired with supportive services aimed at helping youth achieve long-term independence. It’s unclear if Minnesota is slated to receive any of the funding.

(Brandon, MN) — Authorities in west central Minnesota say a man died after being pinned under a tree in Brandon. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the 78-year-old was located underneath the tree late Wednesday morning. Paramedics tried to the save man, but he died at scene. Deputies say it appears to be an accident. There were many trees down in the Alexandria area due to strong winds from the early morning thunderstorms.
