>>Suspect in Shooting of State Lawmakers Captured in Sibley County

(Green Isle, MN) — An intense manhunt for the man accused of shooting two state lawmakers and their spouses ended Sunday night in Sibley County.  Fifty-seven-year-old Vance Boelter surrendered to authorities amid drones and SWAT teams near his home in Green Isle.  B-C-A Superintendent Drew Evans says, “people across the state of Minnesota and legislators that were targeted in these attacks, and they may have been listed, can breathe a sigh of relief as quickly as possible.”  Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said there’s no question that this is the largest manhunt in the state’s history.  Around 7 p-m Sunday, a Sibley County resident reported that their trail camera captured an image that was consistent with Boelter and SWAT officers and deputies were immediately deployed to the area.

 

>>Boelter’s First Court Hearing Set for Monday Afternoon

(Minneapolis, MN) — Vance Boelter is scheduled to make his first court appearance today (Mon 1:30pm) for the alleged killings of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shootings of Senator John Hoffman and his wife.  Fifty-seven-year-old Bolter is facing two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in Hennepin County.  A grand jury will likely be convened to consider first-degree murder charges in the fatal shootings of the Hortman’s.  B-C-A Superintendent Drew Evans said federal prosecutors are also preparing charges against Boelter.  The criminal complaint says three A-K 47 assault rifles, and a nine-millimeter handgun were found in Boelter’s vehicle.

 

>>Walz Celebrates Capture of Suspected Shooter of Hortman and Hoffman

(Blaine, MN) — Governor Tim Walz is celebrating the capture of the man accused of killing former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shootings of Senator John Hoffman and his wife.  Walz told reporters Sunday night, “It’s 48 hours that law enforcement were involved in a complex and dangerous manhunt. They spent their Father’s Day away from their families to deliver justice to Melissa and Mark Hortman and their children who spent this Father’s Day alone.”  The governor spoke against what he called politically motivated shootings.  Walz said, “A moment in this country where we watch violence erupt, this cannot be the norm. This cannot be the way we deal with our political differences. Now’s the time for us to recommit to the core values of this country.”

 

>>Walz Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Former House Speaker Melissa Hortman

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota and U-S flags are flying at half-staff to honor fallen House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.  The proclamation from Governor Walz says, “Minnesota lost a great leader. A formidable public servant and a fixture of the state Capitol, Melissa Hortman woke up every day determined to make our state a better place.”  The governor says Representative Hortman is irreplaceable, and her death is a monumental loss.  Homes and businesses in Minnesota are encouraged to lower their flags to remember Hortman.

 

>>Evette Hoffman Gives Update on Medical Conditions

(Coon Rapids, MN) — U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar is sharing an update on the medical conditions of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Evette.  A message sent by Evette to Klobuchar says John is enduring many surgeries and is closer every hour to being out of the woods.  She writes, “He took 9 bullet hits. I took 8 and we are both incredibly lucky to be alive.”  Police say the Hoffmans were shot in their Champlin home early Saturday before the shooter killed former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in nearby Brooklyn Park.

 

>>Burglary Trial of Senator Mitchell Delayed Due to Hortman Assassination

(Detroit Lakes, MN) — The burglary trial of state Senator Nicole Mitchell of Woodbury is being delayed for a second time.  Jury selection was scheduled to begin today (Mon) in Becker County but has been postponed following the fatal shootings of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband.  Before setting a new trial date, the judge must now approve a continuance.  Senator Mitchell is accused of breaking into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home in April 2024.  The trial was delayed in January due to the start of 2025 legislative session.

 

>>’No Kings’ Rallies Draw Thousands of Trump Protesters in Minnesota

(Minneapolis, MN) — Some of the “No Kings” rallies in Minnesota were cancelled this weekend, but thousands of people still took to the streets to protest President Trump and his policies.  Protesters in northeast Minneapolis were waving anti-Trump signs and yelling “dump Trump.”  One man was angry about immigration raids and accused the Trump administration of ripping innocent people away from their families.  A woman named Bambi says, “It’s very obvious, very clear that the billionaires do not care about us at all. The working-class people are completely on our own here.”  Organizers say 80 thousand people showed up the State Capitol “No Kings” rally.

 

>>2 Arrests Made in Deadly Shooting Sunday Morning in Duluth

(Duluth, MN) — One person is dead and two suspects are jailed in connection with a shooting early Sunday in Duluth.  Police treated a man at the scene for multiple gunshot wounds, but he died at the hospital.  Another person was shot but not injured.  Officers identified the suspects, and they were later detained in Cloquet.  A 35-year-old man was arrested for second-degree murder and assault and 41-year-old woman was booked for aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

 

>>St. Louis County Man Critically Injured in ATV Rollover

(Mountain Iron, MN) — A northeast Minnesota man is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries suffered in an A-T-V crash in St. Louis County.  Sheriff’s deputies say the 41-year-old man was found unresponsive Saturday afternoon near Mountain Iron.  A witness told authorities the man was speeding when he flipped the A-T-V trying to turn into his driveway.  He was airlifted to the hospital.  It’s believed alcohol contributed to the crash.

 

>>Minnesota Historical Society Putting on “Recipe for Adventure” Program

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Historical Society is combining a love of cooking with a love of learning more about the state this summer.  Programs specialist Jacob Rorem says this summer visitors to M-N-H-S sites and museums can get a free cookbook highlighting each historic location.  Rorem says the recipes will be missing, but to complete the pages visitors will need to collect historic recipes from across the statewide network of sites.  Rorem says they put on the scavenger hunt to get people to visit more over the summer, but also to drum up excitement for a Julia Child exhibit that is coming this fall.
