>>GOP House Speaker Demuth Pays Tribute to Fallen DFL Speaker Hortman

(St. Paul, MN) — Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth is paying tribute to fallen D-F-L House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.  Demuth says even though they were on the opposite sides of the aisle, she had great respect for how Hortman led the chamber and the D-F-L caucus.  She added that Hortman was incredibly wise and really cared about Minnesota and did what she thought was best for the state.  Demuth remembers meeting Hortman for the first time in 2019, and right from the start, she says Hortman wanted to build a relationship between the two lawmakers. Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday.

(Eagan, MN) — The slaying of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and shooting of Senator John Hoffman have Minnesota in the national spotlight for the wrong reason.  Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier says we’ve had turbulent times since the early years of statehood.  Schier says,” there was the Depression of the 1930s and a lot of labor strikes then, the big demonstrations in the 1960s and early 70s, but Minnesota has never had an assassination like this in its state history. This is remarkable.”  Schier says it has not been a good five years for Minnesota going back to the police killing of George Floyd and riots in Minneapolis.

 

>>DFL Condemns Republican’s False Claims Tying Walz to Assassin

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota Democrats are firing back after a Republican state lawmaker shared what they’re calling a “dangerous and disrespectful” lie.  D-F-L leaders are condemning G-O-P Representative Duane Quam of Byron, who falsely claimed that the wife of accused shooter Vance Boelter once interned for Governor Tim Walz.  The Minnesota D-F-L says that claim has already been debunked.  Party Chair Richard Carlbom released a statement, saying, “No one who is using the murder of Melissa Hortman to spread this heinous lie belongs anywhere near the Minnesota Legislature.”  Carlbom called the claim “despicable” and “beneath the dignity” of an elected official.

 

>>CentraCare Responds to False Claims About Doctor

(St. Cloud, MN) — St. Cloud-based CentraCare is pushing back on misinformation linking one of its physicians to the deadly shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers.  The health system says an A-I assistant on the X app, formerly known as Twitter, falsely claimed Doctor  Boelter was connected to the crime.  CentraCare says that’s not true—and warns that spreading false information can harm reputations and cause unnecessary distress.  Doctor Boelter shares a first name with the suspect’s wife, who was questioned by police in Mille Lacs County but has not been charged.  CentraCare is urging both the public and media to verify facts before sharing.

 

>>Federal Medicaid Cuts Could Make it Harder for Minnesotans to Enroll

(St. Paul, MN) — The state Department of Humans Services says possible federal cuts to Medicaid might make enrolling in the program more difficult for Minnesotans.  D-H-S Medicaid Director John Connolly says the bill would prohibit federal Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care and family planning clinics.  Connolly says if the cuts were to happen, it could cost Minnesota roughly $500 million annually.  The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that between 152,000 and 253,000 Minnesotans could lose coverage if the cuts were made to Medicaid.

 

>>Severe Storms in Minnesota Produce Tornadoes and Large Hail

(Chanhassen, MN) — The National Weather Service received a handful of tornado reports during Monday’s severe storms.  Meteorologist Melissa Dye says several of the reports in south central Minnesota were the same tornado in Nicollet and Blue Earth counties.  She says there was also a reported tornado touchdown in Todd County south of Wadena.  A roof was blown off a barn near Bertha.  Dye says there were funnel clouds and rotating wall clouds in Carver and McCleod counties, but no tornadoes touched down.  Three-and-a-quarter inch fell near Chanhassen, two inch hail was reported near Mankato, and Waconia received half-dollar sized hail.

 

>>System Upgrades to Disrupt Severe Weather Alerts Across Minnesota

(Mankato, MN) – The National Weather Service is alerting Minnesotans that system upgrades will temporarily disrupt NOAA Weather Radio alerts across the state.  Several stations will be unable to broadcast tornado or severe weather warnings through tomorrow (Wed).  Officials urge residents to use alternative sources—such as T-V, websites, or mobile apps—to stay informed during this period.

 

>>Simulated Nuclear Incident Drill Today at Monticello Nuclear Plant

(Monticello, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is teaming up with state, county, and city agencies for an emergency drill today (Tues) at the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant.  The annual exercise tests how well federal, state, and local responders would handle an incident at the facility.  Residents near the plant may notice emergency personnel conducting the drill but officials say there’s no cause for concern.

 

>>Strawberry Picking Season Kicks Off Across Minnesota

(Anoka, MN) — Strawberry season is officially underway in Minnesota, with farms across the state opening their fields to eager pickers.  But farmers say timing is everything.  Strawberries are sensitive to weather, so daily ripeness can vary.  Growers say the darker the berry the better.  The strawberry season typically runs through early July, so fans of the sweet red fruit have just a few short weeks to fill their baskets.

 

>>Minnesota Lynx Host Las Vegas Aces

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx go for their 11th win of the season tonight (Tues 7pm) against the Las Vegas Aces at Target Center.  The Lynx improved to 10-and-1 with a 101-78 win over the L-A Sparks Saturday on their home court.  Napheesa Collier led Minnesota with 32 points, eight rebounds and six assists.  The 5-and-5 Aces are coming off 76-70 home loss to Phoenix.  Vegas is missing All-Star forward and three-time M-V-P A’ ja Wilson.
