(St. Paul, MN) — A candlelight vigil to remember House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark is being held tonight (Wed 8pm) on the steps of the State Capitol. The Hortman’s were killed in what authorities have called a political assassination Saturday morning in their Brooklyn Park home. Organizers say there will not be any speakers as this will be a time to reflect and remember the lives of Melissa and Mark Hortman. The public is asked to bring their own candles, but no signs of any kind will be allowed. The capitol building will be closed during the vigil.

(St. Paul, MN) — Security and safety at the State Capitol are being discussed following the shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses in their homes. There are no security checkpoints to get inside the Capitol building in St. Paul, although the State Patrol has troopers on duty 24 hours a day. Senator Erin Maye Quade of Apple Valley says it’s important to note these violent attacks did not happen in the capitol, but it has her thinking about safety there. She says, “I don’t think we should have guns in the chamber. We sit in a fish bowl and have people taking votes with people standing above you with guns. We can’t have signs, but you can have guns.” Home addresses of state lawmakers have now been taken off the legislature’s website as a precaution.

(Washington, DC) — Minnesota’s U-S senators took the floor in Washington, D-C to honor and recognize their friends, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. U-S Senator Tina Smith told members about Speaker Hortman, “In short, millions, millions of Minnesotans are better off because of the work she did. Her record of accomplishment is so extensive, it’s hard to capture it all in just a short few minutes.” Senator Amy Klobuchar said, “Melissa and Mark Hortman were the best of us. I am shattered to have lost them. But eternally grateful to have known them.” Klobuchar and Smith both talked about the Hortman children and their wish that people would do kind acts as a way to honor their parents.

(St. Paul, MN) — Eight public skatepark projects across Minnesota are getting a total of four-million dollars in state grants. Paul Forsline of City of Skate says they’ve been pushing the legislature many years for this funding. He says, “We’re pretty proud that these grants are significant numbers that really get these communities almost skatepark, or give them a substantial amount towards the parks.” Brainerd received 750 thousand dollars, Rochester got 650 thousand, Winona was awarded 550 thousand dollars, and Northfield is getting a half-million-dollar grant. Funding also went to Minnetonka, St. Paul, and two projects in Minneapolis.

(Detroit Lakes, MN) — The burglary trial for Senator Nicole Mitchell of Woodbury is rescheduled for July 14th in Becker County. Jury selection was originally set to begin Monday but was postponed following the recent shootings involving Senator John Hoffman, House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, and their spouses. Mitchell was arrested in April 2024 after allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home, claiming she was retrieving her late father’s belongings, including his ashes.

(Frontenac, MN) — Authorities in southeastern Minnesota say a missing fisherman was safely found early Tuesday along the Mississippi River. The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office was called to Frontenac State Park after the man hadn’t been heard from in over an hour. Fearing he may have fallen from a bluff, deputies launched a search using a thermal drone, K-9 team, and boats. Searchers eventually found the man along the riverbank with minor injuries. He was transported by boat and reunited with his family.

(Golden Valley, MN) — General Mills is discontinuing three of its new Cheerios flavors. The Minnesota-based cereal maker introduced Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios Minis, and Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Oat Crunch earlier this year. The company hasn’t said why the cereals are being pulled from store shelves. General Mills also announced Tuesday that it will remove artificial colors from its products by the end of 2027 and synthetic dyes from cereals and foods served in K-12 schools next summer.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx rallied past the Las Vegas Aces 76-62 at Target Center Tuesday night to improve to 11-and-1. The Lynx outscored the Aces 48-23 in the second half. Courtney Williams led Minnesota with 20 points, Diamond Miller and Natisha Hiedeman each scored 12, and Alanna Smith added ten points and 13 rebounds. All-Star forward Napheesa Collier left the game early in the third quarter with a sore back. The Lynx earned a spot in the Commissioner’s Cup final with the victory.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Frost are bringing back goaltender Maddie Rooney on a three-year contract extension. The 27-year-old Andover native and Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog won Olympic gold and silver medals for Team U-S-A in 2018 and 2022, and two P-W-H-L championships. Rooney says it’s been such an honor to play professional hockey in her home state and is grateful to continue her career in front of the best fans, friends, and family. Her new contract runs through the 2027-2028 season.
