>>State Capitol Candlelight Vigil Honors Fallen Speaker Hortman and Husband

(St. Paul, MN) — Mourners including Governor Tim Walz, Congresswoman Angie Craig and dozens of state lawmakers paid their respects to Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman with a candlelight vigil on the steps of the state Capitol.  Senator Ann Johnson Stewart of Minnetonka says she still can’t believe Hortman is gone.  Johnson Stewart said, “She was so good and we could have had her for another 10 to 15 years and she would have done even more good for people who don’t even know who she was. She was amazing.”  Lori from Maplewood just wanted to just to be with other people to grieve and share common feelings about what’s happened.  Besides candles, many mourners brought flowers and added messages to the growing memorial outside the Capitol.

 

>>Hennepin County Attorney Wants to Prosecute Boelter Before the Feds

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office wants to prosecute Vance Boelter before the U-S Attorney’s Office in Minnesota gets the case.  Boelter is facing both state and federal charges for the alleged killings of House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shootings of Senator John Hoffman of Champlin and his wife.  A spokesperson for Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says she asked federal prosecutors to let her office seek murder charges against Boelter first.  The U-S Attorney’s Office has the authority to determine the order in which Boelter is prosecuted.

 

>>Suspect Charged with 2nd Degree Murder in Northern Minnesota Stabbing

(Bemidji, MN) — A man is jailed on two-million dollars bond in connection with a deadly stabbing Sunday night near Cass Lake in northern Minnesota.  The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Codi Brown was stabbed in Ten Lake Township and later died in the hospital.  Deputies say 21-year-old Avery Cadwell was arrested Monday morning and charged Tuesday with the second-degree murder of Brown.  Cadwell is in the Beltrami County Jail awaiting his next court hearing.

 

>>North Dakota Woman Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash near Monticello

(Monticello, MN) — A woman from North Dakota is dead after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near Monticello in Wright County.  State troopers say four vehicles, including a semi-truck, were involved in the rear-end crash Wednesday night.  A passenger in a S-U-V, 69-year-old Susan Rintoul from Minot, died in the crash.  Three of the drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and the semi driver was unharmed.  The report says the victim was not buckled up.

 

>>Extreme Heat Watch in Minnesota This Weekend

(Chanhassen, MN) — Most of Minnesota is under an extreme heat watch this weekend.  National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Griesinger says we could see high temperatures in the mid-90s and dew points in the 70s.  He says the heat and humidity this weekend will be kind of our first taste of summer.  Temps could reach 100 degrees in southwest Minnesota.  He says areas in far northern Minnesota could warm into the 90s this weekend.

 

>>SMSU Names Jones Interim President

(St. Paul, MN) — Doctor David Jones is the interim president of Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall.  His appointment by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees takes effect July 1st.  Jones currently serves as vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Minnesota State University Mankato.  He’s credited with boosting enrollment and improving student retention.  Minnesota State Chancellor Scott Olson calls him a “steady and experienced leader” who knows the system and is well-suited to guide S-M-S-U through a year of transition.

 

>>DNR FalconCam Chick Takes Flight

(St. Paul, MN) –- Officials say one of the Minnesota D-N-R’s FalconCam chicks took its first flight Tuesday morning.  The other two are expected to fledge soon.  Like a toddler’s first steps, the flight may seem clumsy—but these young peregrine falcons are on their way to becoming the fastest animals on Earth.  Parents will keep feeding and protecting the chicks for now, but once they fledge, they likely won’t return.  Catch a final look on the D-N-R FalconCam before the nest is empty again.

 

>>General Mills to Remove Artificial Coloring from Products by 2027

(Golden Valley, MN) — Golden Valley-based General Mills will remove all artificial coloring from its products by the end of 2027.  Officials say 85 percent of their products are already in the clear, but the company wants to “move quickly in reformatting its product portfolio.”  This announcement follows the news that three Cheerios flavors —Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Oat Crunch, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios, and Honey Nut Cheerios Minis — will be discontinued.
