The ex-Minneapolis police officer was convicted in the murder of George Floyd on Memorial Day 2020. G-O-P leaders said the moment of silence was intended to recognize what they view as concerns about due process and fairness in Chauvin’s prosecution, rather than to celebrate George Floyd’s death. Ellison called the tribute “heartbreaking” and “shocking,” coming just days after the sixth anniversary of Floyd’s murder. In a statement, Ellison said honoring Chauvin, is hurtful to Floyd’s family and undermines accountability under the law. He also argued the gesture disrespects law enforcement officers who serve honorably and damages public trust in the justice system.
