>>Minnesotans say Final Goodbyes to Melissa and Mark Hortman
(Minneapolis, MN) — Hundreds of Minnesotans said their final goodbyes to former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. Former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris also attended the weekend funeral. Governor Tim Walz gave the eulogy and said all of us are searching for meaning to help ease our loss. Walz told mourners, “And maybe it is this moment where each of us can examine the way we work together, the way we talk about each other, the way we fight for things, we care about a moment when each of us can recommit to engaging in politics and life the way Mark and Melissa did fiercely. Enthusiastically heartily. But without ever losing sight of our common humanity.” The governor says millions of Minnesotans live better lives because of the Hortman’s’ public service and politics.

(Eden Prairie, MN) — Helping Paws is remembering Melissa Hortman for her work with the nonprofit service dog training organization. Hortman began training her golden retriever, Gilbert, as a service dog in 2021 but he was too friendly to fit the job requirements, and he became her pet. Helping Paws Executive Director Alyssa Golob says says they’ve seen an outpouring of donations since the killings of Melissa and Mark, but more importantly more people who want to train a service dog. She says, “if we can train more service dogs because of what happened to Melissa, then we get to pay it forward and pay tribute to her as all these dogs get matched to their person.”

(Chanhassen, MN) — The National Weather Service is reporting at least four tornadoes touched down early Sunday morning in the Carver County area. An EF-1 tornado with wind speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour was confirmed near Lake Zumbra, and another EF-1 with 80 to 90-per-hour winds was spotted near Lake Waconia. Two weak EF-0 tornadoes touched down between Waconia and Cologne and southeast of Cologne. More than 50 thousand Xcel Energy customers lost power during the storms overnight Saturday. No injuries have been reported. There was flash flooding in several parts of the state.

(Rochester, MN) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating a standoff in Rochester on Saturday night where an officer discharged their weapon. Officers were called to report of a domestic dispute involving a man armed with a knife. Police say the suspect fled but was found again around 12:15 a.m. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the man fled, stopped at a home, and exited his vehicle with a rifle. Police say an officer discharged his service weapon when the man was being uncooperative. The man fled into the home, surrendering around 4:45 Sunday morning. No injuries were reported.

(Duluth, MN) — Police in Duluth are investigating a stabbing that left a woman dead. Officers found the woman with stab wounds Saturday night and tried to save her, but she died at the scene. The suspect fled in a vehicle and was later arrested on Interstate 35 in Pine County. Investigators say the suspect and victim are known to each other. No names have been released.

(Sauk Rapids, MN) — A Sauk Rapids woman who pleaded guilty to manslaughter by selling the drugs to her son that killed him is sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. Thirty-eight-year-old Crystal Swenson and 36-year-old Fox Bellanger were accused of selling cocaine laced with fentanyl to her 16-year-old son in March 2024. The teen died of fentanyl toxicity and cocaine use . Bellanger has a settlement conference on July 23rd. A third suspect, forty-eight-year-old Anthony Costello, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years. Swenson gets credit for serving 248 days in county jail.

(Silica, MN) — A teenage girl is injured after A-T-V crash on the Iron Range near Hibbing involving three juveniles. St. Louis County authorities say a 16-year-old girl was driving an A-T-V Saturday when she veered off a minimum maintenance road, struck a tree, and rolled into a ditch—pinning her beneath the vehicle. She was freed and transported to a Hibbing hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two passengers, ages 16 and 14, were not hurt. Deputies say none of the teens were wearing helmets, and limited A-T-V experience may have contributed to the crash.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man found near Target Field earlier this month. Twenty-four-year-old Seloman Kebede was found unresponsive on 7th Street in Minneapolis around 9:45 p.m. on June 13th. Officers say he died in the hospital. He was identified on Sunday. Kebede’s cause of death is still under investigation.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx cruised past the Connecticut Sun 102-63 Sunday evening at Target Center. Napheesa Collier led Minnesota with 23 points, Kayla McBride scored 20, and Courtney Wiliams had 12 points, seven assists and nine rebounds. The Lynx host Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever Tuesday night in the W-N-B-A Commissioner’s Cup championship. Minnesota is the defending champion. This is the second time in history that the Lynx have started a season 14-and-2.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Timberwolves are bringing back forward Julius Randle on a three-year, 100-million-dollar contract extension. Randle had a 30-million-dollar option for next season which would have made him a free agent in 2026. He averaged 18 points and seven rebounds this season. Randle came to Minnesota from the Knicks as part of the trade for Karl-Anthony Towns last fall. The Wolves also reportedly agreed with forward Naz Reid on a five-year, 125-million-dollar contract extension.
