>>Walz Pushes for $700 Million Bonding Bill During Infrastructure Tour

(Robbinsdale, MN) — Governor Walz is traveling around the state looking at large infrastructure projects that could be covered by the passing of another bonding bill. The governor is proposing 907 million dollars.  Walz says, “This bonding proposal leaves a lot of room in there for local projects, state infrastructure that we’re responsible for at the universities, Minnesota State, those types of things we’ll take care of, but it’s fiscally responsible. It’s the smart thing to do.”  Some lawmakers would like to see an even larger bonding bill totaling 1.1 billion dollars. Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth said there are no promises to these projects this session.

 

>>Federal Appeals Court Backs ICE Immigrant Detention Policy

(St. Paul, MN)  —  A federal appeals court is backing the Trump administration’s immigrant detention policy.   The 2-1 ruling by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals determined that ICE can detain people in deportation proceedings without a bond hearing.  This ruling will apply to Minnesota’s federal courts, where hundreds of immigrants have challenged their detentions.    Minnesota judges have mostly ruled in favor of the petitioners, finding them eligible for bond hearings.  U-S Attorney General Pam Bondi called the ruling a “massive”  court victory.

 

>>Body Camera Video Released from Fatal Shooting by Rochester Police

(Rochester, MN) –  The public can now see body-camera footage from the fatal shooting of a man by Rochester police. The man killed was 47-year-old Cleavon White of Rochester, and the officer who fired the shots is Josiah Duit, a three-year veteran.  Police were called to an apartment on March 11th for a domestic situation.  White was having a mental health crisis and reportedly threatening his young children.  A social worker determined he needed a 72-hour mental health hold. The shooting happened as officers attempted to take White into custody.  The video shows officers approaching White, followed by a struggle.  During the struggle, one officer is  heard saying, “He’s grabbing my gun,” before Duit fired multiple rounds.  White was brought to a hospital and died of his injuries. The Minnesota B-C-A is continuing its investigation.

 

>>Three Adults and Dog Escape Maple Grove House Fire

(Maple Grove, MN) — Fire officials say three adults and a dog were able to escape their burning home Wednesday afternoon in Maple Grove.    Crews found heavy fire in the rear of the house and attic. Initial reports indicated the occupants may still be inside, but all got out safely.  Firefighters from Plymouth and Golden Valley helped put out the fire.  The cause remains under investigation.

 

>>Opening of Soo Locks Signals Start of Great Lakes Shipping Season

(Duluth, MN)  —  The opening of the Soo Locks on the St. Mary’s River allows ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes.    Jayson Hron of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority says the first vessel through Wednesday was a tug-barge.  He says the Dirk S. VanEnkevort and the Michigan trader are headed to Superior for a load of iron ore and will very likely be the first vessel arrival of the 2026 navigation season.   Hron says the VanEnkevort will get there sometime today (Thurs).   The first Saltie from the Atlantic Ocean is expected in Duluth-Superior in early April.

 

>>Twins at Orioles on Opening Day

(Baltimore, MD) —  The Minnesota Twins open the regular season this afternoon (Thurs) in Baltimore.  New manager Derek Shelton is making his debut for Minnesota.   The Twins will send Joe Ryan to the mound against the Orioles. Ryan was 13-10 a year ago with a 3.42  E-R-A.  Baltimore counters with lefthander Trevor Rogers who went  9-3 in 2025. The Twins open the season with three games in Baltimore and three at Kansas City.  The home opener is Friday, April 3rd against the Tampa Bay Rays.

 

>>Timberwolves Knock Off Rockets in Overtime at Target Center

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Timberwolves scored 15 straight points at the end of overtime to beat the Houston Rockets 110-108 last night at Target Center.   The Wolves blew an 11-point lead with under four minutes left in regulation and the Rockets started O-T on a 13-0 run.   Jaden McDaniels led Minnesota with 25 points and Julius Randle scored 24. The 45-28 Timberwolves are now a game-and-a-half ahead of Houston in the Western Conference playoff race.
